Fall is in the air

You can sure tell that Labour Day long weekend signals the end of summer.

We had four campsites occupied this past week. And this weekend, we've had seven.

Even the squirrels are getting ready for winter. We've got a grove of pine trees in the day use area and of course the little pine cones have been falling to the ground all of this week. We noticed little pockets of cones stacked up at the base of the trees and they've been growing larger. Apparently the squirrels put a lot of effort into knowing that their winter food stash is right at the bottom of the tree.

Pine cones neatly piled for the winter.

Other things have been falling to the grounds as well. Even though the leaves haven't really started changing colour, they've started dropping to the ground. Gonna have to get raking again this week I think. Oh, and crab apples. We have two crab apple trees in the front yard of our cabin and the apples are falling to the ground. What a mess they are! Those trees are the biggest pain in the butt! They are really pretty for about two weeks of the year but when the apples start falling, they're a pain.

Kevin, picking up crab apples. Twice a day we pick them up and one of the cabin owners has a place set up where he feeds them to the deer.

And no, we aren't going to make crab apple jelly!!

This coming week could be our last. There hasn't been any official word from the campground directors as to when we're out of here, but lots of discussion from the folks who work in the office, store, and restaurant because everyone has pretty much had enough and just wants to call it a day. Our contract said "between the 15th and the 30th"...so I guess we'll just wait and see. Doesn't seem to make any sense to be paying us when there aren't any campers coming in but we're not involved in the decision making process. If they keep us on, we can find enough to stay busy just puttering around the park.

  1. I love the fact that the parks are almost empty now. It's time for us to be able to move on. My sister has a crab apple tree in her yard and hates it.

    1. We have to admit when we are traveling we prefer to visit parks before July 1 or after the September long weekend when they are much quieter. Can't understand why anyone would want a crab apple tree!

  2. Looks like those squirrels must have itty bitty rakes to take care of those pine cones!! Maybe you could talk them into taking care of the crab apples as well. Cute pictures.

    1. We think it's funny how they neatly pile up all the pine cones under the trees like that. Unfortunately, they don't seem interested in the crab apples!

How funny you should post about this, we've actually lit our log burner for the first time tonight!

And by the way we saw the B-17 flying fortress Sally B today in the air! It was amazing. Will blog about it tomorrow.

Loved your pictures of Sally B and loved that you got to see the airshow for free.

  6. I doubt I'd bother to pick up the crab apples. I should think the deer would find them.

    1. Apparently it is rare to see deer in the park and if they do come it is usually in the winter time so the crap apples would be rotted and buried under the snow by then. They fall on the road in the park outside of our cabin and just make a terrible mess so they do need to be picked up. :(
