Manhattan Vacation Rental

We recently spent three nights in Manhattan's Lower East Side district of New York City. It's a great area to stay in if you're looking for everything that New York City has to offer. Walking distance to some of the most vibrant parts of the city.

Chinatown. Little Italy. And of course the world famous Brooklyn Bridge.

And so we thought it was worthwhile to tell you about the place we stayed.

First of all, everyone knows that Manhattan real estate is among the most expensive in the world. So it should come as no surprise that the apartment we rented was a little small. But unless your independently wealthy, that's what you're going to want anyhow. Besides, you're going to be out exploring all of the time, so you really only need a comfortable place to sleep.

And to make a coffee in the morning!

Here's the location. On Ludlow Street, in the lower east side of Manhattan.

When we arrived there, our son Alex had already spent a night there by himself. The place is small, but hey... we're used to living in a 260 sq ft motorhome! This apartment is at least 400 sq ft. And besides the one double bed, there is also a fold out couch.

No problem for the three of us.

You should know some history of these little apartments in this part of "the city".

At the time, they were called Tenement Housing when they were originally built in New York City. There were cramped conditions, often with many people living in one room. In fact, in that last picture shown above, you can see where there were two fireplaces at one point in time. Those would have been two separate rooms, each with a few people living in them.

There would not have been any running water, and toilet facilities would have been in outhouses at the back of the building.

But now, as with this building, those same apartments have been renovated and are an interesting place to live.

This particular holiday apartment has been renovated and is a great example of being able to live, if only for a few days,  in one of New York City's historical buildings.

If you want to stay here, you need to join Airbnb.com and check out this listing...

Your host Ryan, and partner Sargeant will ensure that your stay in the apartment is stress free and everything you're looking for.

  1. II used Airbnb to get a room in Vancouver for my 50th high school reunion. It was cheaper than the cheapest hotel and close to the venue, A great deal!
