Shopping for Sherman's new battery

Yesterday, we wandered in to the town of Etzatlan. Had to pick up a few things, as well as do some shopping for Sherman's new engine battery.

Last time we were here, two and a half years ago, you had to walk into town alongside the highway. Now, they have a foot and bicycle path!

It doesn't look like it should be that far, but it's actually 2.4 kms (1.5 miles) to the central plaza from the campground. A lot of that is actually through the town though.

Old railway line. I wonder how far the path goes? (Edit: I just checked with Bonnie...she says the path is 7 kms, 4.3 miles long)

Sure makes it a lot nicer for walking into town.

There are obviously a lot of different sizes of automotive engine batteries available. I had taken Sherman's out in order to see the group size stamped on the bottom and I measured it as well just in case. Oh, and I found the date stamp too...May 2006, so we got almost eight years out of that battery!

The group size is 78...a fairly large battery, but that stands to reason as it has to turn over that big 454 cubic inch (7.4 litre) engine!

The first automotive store we stopped at did have that size, however only in the "top of the line" model. We don't need or want the top of the line one. It's not like it'll ever have to come through in -20 weather or anything! Plus, they wanted a somewhat ridiculous 1,900 pesos ($167) for it.

The second store did have the battery we wanted. The guy said it was 1,320 pesos ($116), but 1,250 ($110) if we brought him our old battery. That's better. I checked Walmart's online price in the US and a similar battery would be around $95...so we're not far off.

Bonnie had said she would drive us in to town before we leave in order to buy it.

We wandered around town and bought a strawberry cream popsicle and sat in the central plaza. Then we went to the butcher shop and bought some rib eye steaks. We had bought them here last time, and they were cheap and tender. This time, we asked for two steaks and he went to cut them. When he brought them back, they were huge! Total cost 131 pesos ($11.50) for the two of them, but we'll only cook one at a time and split them up!

There must be a larger grocery store in this town, but we haven't found it yet! So we bought everything we needed at a variety of little shops and walked back to the trailer park.

What was for dinner last night?

That's a big steak!

    1. It was a great steak and sharing it was definitely enough for a meal for both of us.

  2. OK, at first I thought you were going to carry that battery all the way back to the campground. Good luck with that, I thought.
Kind of reminds me of a time we had to go into Orillia by boat to get a propane tank filled, only to discover that it had expired and that we needed to buy a new one. Gah! A full propane tank gets mighty heavy in a very short while.

    1. Nope, we had no intentions of carry it back! Kevin knows how much those batteries weigh.

  4. Really nice that they put in that great walking path to town. There is almost no town in the US that has a walking path TO it I don't think. Glad to hear Sherman will be all fixed up before you head out.

    1. We have come across some walking/cycling paths in some towns but they don't normally lead to the downtown, they are usually beside a river. It's a shame that they don't, maybe then more people would walk or bike to town rather than use their cars all the time.

  5. Another lovely day in paradise! Those pics of the walkway, central plaza AND a steak bbq give me hope that spring will eventually arrive in Canada. Be prepared to see a few remnants of that white stuff when you return in April.

    1. Yep, your winter has gone on long enough! We are really hoping that most of the snow will be gone and that the ground has dried up a bit so that we can get our little blue car out of storage.

  9. Bob, I thought the same and also thought frugal Kevin was going to carry the old battery all the way back to town for his $6 credit! Sorry... you have to know Kevin.

  10. $6 buys a lot of vegetables, right! The steak looks great. Yummy!
