What's the rush...?

I read the other day that an RV'er drove from Puerto Vallarta to Vancouver in four days. That's about 4,400 kms (2,700 miles). How can that possibly be enjoyable? And why would you do it? I can't think of a good reason, but that's just us. I guess for some people it's all about the destination.

Having said that, in a couple of weeks we'll be doing our own marathon drive!

A week from today, we arrive in Ottawa. We'll spend a week visiting friends and family, then get the little blue car out of storage and head out on a 2,900 km (1,800 mile) drive to Cabri Regional Park in Saskatchewan where we'll work for the next five months.

Our upcoming drive.

But we've got 5 or 6 days to do the drive. Even if we do it in five, that's an average of 580 kms (360 miles) per day. Still more than we like, but at least you can take some time to stretch your legs along the way.

Speaking of Cabri, Saskatchewan, it seems they've had a bit of a heat wave this week. On Tuesday, the temperature got up to 20C (68F)! Talking to our contact there, she says the snow is pretty much gone. Yeehaw! This park is quite a bit further south than where we were last year, so we probably won't have to wait until mid-May for the ice to come off the lake!

It was a puttering around day yesterday. I began my cleaning chores for leaving Sherman behind. Took out the window screens and cleaned them and the window sills and the glass itself. Got the job half done. I'll finish it up this afternoon when the sun moves to the other side.

How about this ugly dude?? Ruth spotted him in the broomcloset near the laundry. His body alone was about 4" long!

  1. Those folks must have been just driving a car. I can't see driving an RV that distance. We drove 510 miles from the Isla ( the first 10 miles took an hour ) to San Carlos and it took us 12 hours and we were pushing 65 miles an hour. It is the only day that we do such a distance and it is tiring. In our case we just want to get out of Mexico and on that route there is nothing to see. Perhaps like us they just wanted to stay on the beach as long as they could and then head home. We take 12 days to drive 3000 miles.

    1. 510 miles is way too much for us to do in the motorhome, even in the car we find it too much but sometimes days like this have to be done.

For us part of the trip is the journey.

    2. Thankfully we only do it once per year.

  2. So many trips we took were about "getting there", and it's something that's wired into our brains I think. We have no plan for any marathon drives on the horizon. Or even over the horizon for that matter.
There are probably some folks who think that bug is awesome. I'm not one of them.

    1. Yep, there will always be people who just want to get there and as long as they are happy then good for them but we like to take our time and enjoy the whole trip.

That was definitely one creepy looking bug!

  3. We have done some marathon drives and probably will until we retire. Unfortunately, when you only have a limited amount of time you do what's necessary.

    1. Yep, but when you have months then for us, we try to take our time there and back. These people who took 4 days to do their drive probably had the time, it just doesn't sound very enjoyable to us.

  4. That is a favorite question in the south east. How long does it take you to drive home? We answer "a month" and they look at us like we are weird.

I have a loose rule of filling up the gas tank no more than once a day. It helps keep costs in line and the credit card bill payable as long as we don't drive every day. This usually translates to a maximum of 300 - 350 miles per day.

    1. We get that same look!

I like your thinking about filling up the gas tank. I can understand doing a trip where the last part of the trip is in the cold and then taking your time until the last moment and then make that last big dash home. We have done that before!

  5. We drove the Motorhome up from Texas and it took us 5 days. We stopped at a few campsites to sleep and a few rest stops along the way as well as one longer distraction in Yellowstone (Old faithful) but other than that we drove straight through to Edmonton. If we didn't have just the week to get her home, I'm sure it would have been more enjoyable but the temps alone that year in Texas were topped out at 105c each day, so we were glad to hustle more north where the temps were better for us.

    1. We understand that there are definitely times when you have to do these long drives fairly quickly, as Kevin mentioned we will be doing the long drive from Ottawa to Saskatchewan and will only take 5 to 6 days to do it in. What we are trying to say is if you have the time then wouldn't it be more enjoyable to take your time, who knows you may come across that hidden gem somewhere along the way that you never knew about.

  6. Um, I'm guilty of drives like that. Can I plead the Fifth? ;c)

  7. We do about 250 miles max in a day. On our Canada trip we won't be in any hurry and who knows how much driving we'll do. We want to see as much as we can along the way. What is that creature?

    1. That's the way to do and then if you see something you like you can stop and enjoy. There is always somewhere to stay, either boondocking or in an RV park.

That creature is a whip scorpion! Strange huh!
