Computer problems

Fortunately, it's not our computer! But it's still our problem.

We got our little office cleaned and organized yesterday and plugged in the office computer system. Fired everything up, and of course during the boot process the first screen shows the login, and asks you for the Windows access password.

The big question of the day? What's the password??!!

Long story short, nobody seems to know. They even called the manager from last year, and he said there was a sticky note somewhere that had the password written on it. And I found what appears to be that note, but none of the things written on it seem to work as a password.

We start accepting reservations on Monday morning. The software program that handles this is on that computer, and I want to make sure that it's set up the way I want it set up before taking reservations. That in itself could be quite a few hours of work if it's not set up correctly.

The system is running Windows Vista. There is a way to crack that access password, but it's fairly complicated, even for someone who sort of knows what they're doing! I need some CD's though in order to try it, so I may have to go in to town today. I do have a couple of other things to try first though, so we'll see what happens.

We met the couple who run the canteen here. They dropped their trailer off yesterday, so that's our first RV to arrive at the park. Most of the seasonals will start bringing in their RV's between May 14th and May 17th.

Oh, deer! There are antelope here as well. They look a little different, so we'll have to try and get a pic of one.

Our Canadian May long weekend is quite early this year. The Victoria Day holiday is always held on the Monday preceding May 25th, and because the 25th is on a Sunday this year, the long weekend is the 17th, 18th, 19th...only two weeks away.

There are no campers here until Friday the 16th, so we've got a fair bit of time to get things ready. And, we've heard that May long weekend isn't nearly the event here that it was up at Sturgeon Lake last year.

Yes, Ruth is on bathroom duty again this year. There are five washroom buildings, each containing two toilets and two showers. We're hoping that most people use their own facilities because the seasonal sites all come with full hookups. So we'll see how that goes, but it should be less work than last year. Can't start getting them cleaned and ready yet because they have someone coming in to do some repair work on them next week.

So she's going to get the area around our trailer cleaned up and looking decent. It's going to take some work, but I'm sure that by next month when we can get some flowers planted it will look quite nice.

Yup. Needs some work.

  1. The "antelope" you saw are most likely pronghorns. Pronghorns aren't antelopes---they are actually closely related to giraffes.

    1. You are correct Dugg, thanks for that tidbit of information.

  2. Worst case scenario, you can make a reservation with pen and paper until you get the system sorted out. I take it the 2 sofas are being donated somewhere.

    1. Yes, he could have done that but that would have been frustrating especially when you know you have the system in front of you.

Unfortunately those sofas are headed to the dump, they are past the point of passing them on to someone else.

  3. You do have your work cut out for you. But you do like a challenge.

    1. Yes, Kevin likes a challenge, especially when it is related to the computer.

  4. I had no idea that pronghorns weren't antelope. Thanks Dugg for that info. Now I'll need to go study up on that. Good luck with that computer.

    1. I just found out that the town of Cabri (and the nearby regional park) was named after the pronghorn.

    2. Luck seems to with us Jim and Sandie, more on that in tomorrow's post.

You beat me to Dugg. After I saw you comment earlier today about the pronghorns, I googled it and found that Cabri is the native word for antelope or a meaning similar to it.

  5. If that relic is running Vista, it's time for a new computer. Vista came out in what, 2008? How can that be functional? Sharpen those pencils.

    1. Yep, Vista was available from early 2007 until early 2010. Still works fine (and functional!) in my own laptop that we purchased in August of 2007!

But yes, I'll be looking for a new computer in the fall...

  6. Ugh! Passwords! I used to have three computer systems at work that each required a password and it had to be changed every 90 days. And you weren't allowed to write your passwords down.

When the statute of limitations in up, I'll divulge where I wrote them down...

    1. I also worked for a company that had a similar policy. We only had one computer but several different programs and each one needed a different password that we could only keep for 1-3 months depending on the program. I remember finding it difficult when I came back for a two week holiday to get into the systems.

  7. I listened to a computer show on the radio today coming from Phoenix. The guy said that Vista only makes up 3% of all Microsoft users and Micro 7 over 49%.

I made a huge mistake by not buying a disk from the computer guy, Antonio, in Mazamitla. He said it had thousands of random passwords and with the disc you could open just about any wifi spot. 150 pesos, oh well. C U guys soon. I am hunting for a good scotch to bring with us. Get ready!

    1. Well I guess we are still stuck in the "old days", Kevin has Vista and I have XP and we don't have a cell phone!

Can't wait to see you guys! Do you know about what day you will arrive, more or less?
