Happy Birthday, Canada!

Canada's 147th birthday today, and of course it's a national holiday across the country. It was on this date in 1867 that the British North American Act combined the colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia with the then Province of Canada (the lower sections of modern day Ontario and Quebec) to become the country of Canada.

British Columbia and Prince Edward Island joined Canada by 1873, with Saskatchewan and Alberta being created in 1905. Newfoundland joined the party in 1949.

Interestingly, the people of Newfoundland held a referendum in 1948. The official results were that 52% wanted to join Canada, and 48% wanted to be independent. I didn't know that!

Those numbers are pretty close to the official results of the 1995 Quebec referendum where 49.42% voted "Yes" to separation and 50.56% voted "No".

Obviously still some dissension in the country, but that's about as far as we're going to get into politics here! For now...Happy Birthday, Canada!

What's going on at the park?

A kind of a blustery day yesterday. Windy, and mostly overcast. The water level has risen some more, and is supposed to peak on July 3rd. We moved the dock in a little more, even though there were no boats on the water. A little too much wave action.

Kevin driving the tractor. And our other summer student Kevin W. helping.

I found a box of brand new Canada flags and went around giving some of them out. In exchange for a free flag, I got some pictures of our campers enjoying the park!

    1. I think the campers liked the idea too! Looks like you had a bit of a wet day there in Ottawa for Canada Day.
