Jeju Island

We've been spending a little more time planning our month of October in Korea. One of the places we're wanting to visit is called Jeju Island.

Many of you will remember the horrible ferry disaster that occurred in April of this year when 300 people were killed. This ferry had been heading from the Korean mainland to Jeju Island.

Jeju Island is one of the nine provinces of South Korea, and it is located about 80 kms (50 miles) south of the mainland.

Jeju Island at the bottom of this map.

Jeju Island measures approximately 73 kms (45 mi) across, east to west, and 41 kms (25 mi) from north to south. This might be the only time that we rent a car while we're there. Public transportation seems relatively easy on the mainland, but it might be more convenient on the island to have a car for a day or two.

It's become a popular tourist spot for both mainland Koreans and vacationers from both China and Japan. But there is an English presence as well, as can be seen from the island's official website...

There is also a hiking trail that goes all around the island. It consists of 21 interconnected routes, 5 sub routes, and even a spur that leads to the islands international airport! Hmm. Maybe we won't need a rental car! Just kidding. Each interconnected route is about 16 kms, so maybe we'll hike a couple of those while we're there.

Not showing you any photos of the island! You'll have to wait until we're actually there. Boy, we're starting to get itchy feet. Three months ago we were glad to finally settle in one spot for a while, but that feeling has pretty much passed!. Now we're pretty much ready to get on the go again.

Our Amazon.com deal of the day is for our RV'ing readers. Many of you use inline filters for the water supply to your RV, and the Camco ones are especially popular.

On Sale for only $14.41. Buy three in order to get free shipping! Then give one of them away as a gift to an RV'ing friend.

  1. Will be interested to see how you like Korea. A couple we know recently went to Seoul for a wedding and said it was a great place to visit.

    1. That sounds like a plan! As we get closer to the time you will have to send us your plans and then we can plan accordingly.

  4. Just saying hi. I have been following your blog for a few weeks now and am looking forward to reading more of your experiences. I went to Korea end of last year but did not go to Jeju so I hope to learn from here what I missed out on.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and following along on our blog. Please let us know if there is anything special that we should see while we are in Korea. We like to get off the beaten path and see things that the normal tourist may not take the time visit. We are looking forward to visiting Jeju Island as well and hope that we can find some nice little gems there.

    1. Thank you very much for the link to your blog post about the village. It really looks like a beautiful area there and a very interesting place to visit. I have marked it on my map and list and if we are in that area then we will definitely try to make time to see it. Thank you once again.

  6. Jeju is wonderful. I'm sure you'll have a great time. The highlight for us was hiking sections of the Olle hiking trails around the island. The history of the haenyo women divers is fascinating too.

    1. Yes, we are definitely planning on hiking some of the sections, if we had more time we would probably hike the whole thing but unfortunately we only have 4 weeks total in South Korea and there is just too much to see already. We are really looking forward to this trip as it will be our first in Asia.
