Sunday is typically family day in Mexico. Most Mexicans work a six day week, so Sunday is the only day to get together with family.
So Alfredo was there and so was his younger brother and two sisters and in total, four of their children. And of course a few of the neighbourhood children! Mary was working until late afternoon because she had had Friday off.
Five girls, one hammock!
I was pretty lazy all day. Even Ruth had a nap in a hammock! But Alfredo had a project on the go...he was building a cardboard truck for one of the neighborhood boys...
Alfredo and his son Gael, getting the materials ready.
Painting the box of the truck.
Starting to look like a truck. We haven't seen the finished product yet because the glue was drying.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the shade...
Kevin, lazing the day away.
They made a big pot of pozole for dinner. The corn hominy has to boil for hours, then they add chicken, pork, and onion. When the soup is ready, you have it in a bowl and you sprinkle various fresh shredded and chopped uncooked veggies into it. Onion, radish, lettuce, peppers etc.
Chicken and corn hominy boiling away. They still do a lot of their cooking over a fire, mainly because it's cheaper than using gas!
Delicious!
Dinner is served.
Today is our last full day in Puerto Escondido. Tomorrow, we fly back to Mexico City for a night. Not much on the agenda for today. Ruth has a blocked ear so maybe we'll stop in at the doctor's office where Mary works and see if we can't get that cleared up!
What's a blocked ear?
ReplyDeleteIt's like when you get water in your ear and can't clear it out, except mine doesn't seem to be plugged with water. It won't "pop" so I can't hear very well and I am finding it very annoying.
DeletePossibly swimmer's ear. I have flushed out ear with 50/50 mix of white distilled vinegar and rubbing alcohol and a naturopath told me that if you put a crushed garlic clove in a little oil and leave for a couple of hours and put a bit of this oil in your ear, it will help also. Check online.
ReplyDeleteNo, it's wasn't water in my ear. My ear was totally clogged up with wax. It's been cleaned out now but I do know that there is a mixture similar to the one you have mentioned that I am going to use every few months to soften the wax so that it wouldn't get clogged up again. Thanks for the suggestions!
DeleteOh man we love pazole, but what we make has a tomato base with a lot of spice. Ours also has pork and hominy. We never find it in the Mexican restaurants around here.
ReplyDeleteSafe travels tomorrow.
We have to admit that we were surprised that it wasn't spicy. This one had both pork and chicken in it. It was very tasty all the same. You may have to see if you can find a restaurant near by, by googling pazole and your area, you may be surprised to find that there is one close by.
DeleteFunny but cooking over fire appeals to me - especially if it saves money! That soup looks delicious, never tried it though. I hope you get the ear situation cleared up before the flight.
ReplyDeleteThe other bonus to cooking over a fire is that it is outside so you aren't heating the indoors up. You will have to look for a recipe on line. I am pretty sure you can buy hominy in Canada.
DeleteThe ear is all sorted out! :-)
Blocked ear + air travel? Best get that sorted out, or you might find yourself in some discomfort? Good luck.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly why we went to get it done today. I had waited over a week hoping it would clear up by itself but it wouldn't and I didn't want any problems on the flight. Things are good with it now.
DeleteGlad you got the ear taken care of before getting on the plane. A lazy day in a hammock sounds good to me.
ReplyDeleteSo am I, Jim and Sandie. I didn't need any surprises from the airplane flight.
DeleteIf it hasn't popped, it will probably do so on the flight. Love pozole and anything cooked over an open fire. Tortillas de harina on a fire stoked comal. Yummy.
ReplyDeleteDon't think even the air pressure would have popped that ear., the wax was packed in there tight! Anyways, I am glad that it has been cleaned out and I have a clean bill of health, makes me feel much better about going up in the plane.
