I guess we're here for a few more days!

We had planned on being here at Isla de la Piedra for three nights. That turned into four, and now it's going to be a full week!

Ruth has a molar that's been bothering her and getting worse. Yes, it's the same tooth that we tried to have fixed in Toluca, although our dentist friend there had said the tooth was cracked and a temporary repair might or might not work. Turns out that it didn't work, so it was off to the dentist yesterday!

Chris and Juan were going over to the city anyhow, so we went together. We took the panga (water taxi) and paid the local rate of 8 pesos (65 cents) each for the one way trip.

The Mexican marines are in town!

Juan and Chris on the panga.

We went to the dentist, and she was able to see Ruth right away. Unfortunately she had to refer us to a root canal specialist and we weren't able to get an appointment there until Monday. She did give Ruth a prescription for pain killers so she can survive through the weekend.

Next up was a stop for lunch. Chris and Juan knew a place in the market where they do the best shrimp burgers. We couldn't have one because of the bun, but they sure did look good!

Shrimp burger. Sure does look messy to eat. Sometimes that's the best food!

Juan, getting a picture of his shrimp burger.

Juan, still getting a picture of his shrimp burger.

Holy cow Juan...how many pictures did you take??

Ruth and I each had one of the combo specials. A couple of quesadillas with pork and all the fixings, and french fries and a cold drink for 40 pesos ($3.20) each.

Back at the embarcadero (boat launch) we took the water taxi back to the Isla. This is also where the fishermen process some of their take, so there are always pelicans hanging around for the scraps. They sure are funny looking birds!

We had been invited to Colin and Contessa's next door neighbours for happy hour. Jurgen and Paula are from Vancouver area and had driven down here in their "new to them" 2006 Holiday Rambler Navigator motorhome. These units sold for close to half a million dollars when they were new, and can now be picked up for between $150,000 and $200,000.

Pocket change.

Anyhow, they invited us for a tour, so we had a peek inside.

Paula, Ruth, and Juan.

Nice flower arrangement.

Their view out the front window.

The RV's here are kind of packed close together, so the only decent view they have is out the front window.

Kevin, trying out the driver's seat!

Very nice, but a little over the top for us. Besides, we could hardly afford to put tires on it! Oh, and to fill up the tank...it holds 600 litres of diesel fuel!

One of the best things about this location is the sunsets...yesterday's was truly fantastic!

We went back to Sherman, and plugged in the computer. Except, something was wrong with the power supply. Again! This is the fifth power supply we have bought for this little laptop. The last one was in October in Korea!

Junk!

Then, I checked the power coming out of our backup inverter and it was only putting out 94 volts. Yes, it's supposed to be between 110 and 125. So, I guess we're going shopping for one of those as well.

Obviously because you're reading this, we've fixed everything up. You'll have to read about it in tomorrow's blog post!

On that note...thanks for doing your Amazon.com shopping through our links here. This helps us to pay for all of these little incidentals that have been breaking down lately. Because when you shop through our links, we make a small commission, and you pay the same price anyhow...

  1. Oh my... shrimp burgers! I could go for that... bun and all. You sure look like you're having a great time... makes me wonder what it is about Mazatlan that turns me off.....

    1. Those shrimp burgers looked delicious! We are having a good time, actually a better one than we thought we would have here. I think because we are staying away from the normal touristy things and places, that, that has made a bit of a difference. The bugs in the evening are still a pain though, maybe that's what turned you off of Mazatlan.

  2. Good thing for painkillers. I know that pending root canal pain. It's a doozie.
Hope it all turns out well on the dentist end of things for Ruth.

    1. Thanks Bob and yes, the pain isn't much fun. I think this is the first real toothache that I have ever had.

  3. Wow, lots of problems in a short period of time. But that happens in real life and full timing is real life. So sorry Ruth is in need of a root canal. OUCH! Those sunsets are simply gorgeous. Worth every day you have to stay longer I think. I take it the quesadillas must be made of corn rather than flour???

    1. Yes, you are totally right sherry. Life isn't always a beach when you are fulltiming. Just like regular life things go wrong and you just learn to deal with them. It is still life just a different type of life style and one that we wouldn't change for almost anything!

Just about everywhere sells corn tortillas, it is a staple here in Mexico. You would be hard pressed to find fresh made flour tortillas, so we generally have very little trouble eating gluten free here.

  4. Ruth, I sympathize with your tooth pain, it can hurt! I hope they can fix it and you won't have any more troubles. Thanks for all the pictures!

    1. Thank you Kay, I am hoping that it will be totally fixed up on Monday. I hate taking pain killers or any kind of medication for that matter but I am at the moment. I just have to make it through the weekend!

  5. The sunsets there are amazing and the Panga we did so many times over the 2 months we were there.
Brining back some great memories for us.
Good luck with Ruth's dentist and your power supply.

  6. I don't have a gluten problem, so I'd be all over that shrimp burger. Looks like a round Po'Boy.

    1. So were Chris and Juan! That was the second time they have visited this little stall since they arrived on Dec. 22nd.

  7. You know this better than me Kevin but when we run the computer when we are boondocking we are using the inverter to convert 12 volts to 120 volts and then using the computer's "brick" to bring the 120 back down to 12 volts. I keep telling my self to remember to buy a cable that will allow me to go directly from 12 volts to the computer. This is probably what you have done.

    1. Not that simple. Most laptops run on more than 12 volts. In fact, the one for Ruth's little laptop is a 19 volt output.

    2. You are right. My little netbook is 19 volts as well. Don't know where that idea came from.

  8. I want that shrimp burger! Hope Ruth's dental work is successful. I am a dental weenie and would hate to have to go back for MORE on the same tooth. Poor her! :-(

    1. I am not looking forward to it, to be honest but I am not enjoying the pain either so I don't have much choice. Hoping that by tomorrow afternoon it will be feeling much better.

    1. Yep, another great day under our belts, well other than the tooth!

Thinking we would like to go up the hill here on the Isla today or walk down the beach the other way. Let us know if you want to join us.
