To the bottom of Basaseachi Canyon

We set out yesterday morning at about 10:30am for what we figured would be a three or four hour hike. Turned out that we were gone for five and a half hours! Pretty quiet for the morning part of the hike, and when we got to the bottom of the canyon at the base of Mexico's highest waterfall, we were the only ones there.

We figured we'd see a few more people in the afternoon because many people come to Basaseachi Falls National Park from the city of Chihuahua. And we did see maybe a dozen other people heading down as we were heading back up.

First, we had to hike up the 600 meters of paved road just to get to the trailhead going back down.

That's where we're headed...the base of Mexico's highest waterfall.

Yep, the trail was pretty steep at times.

Ruth, on the trail down.

We're about half way now.

Downhill, every step of the way.

Kevin, at the base of the falls!

Ruth (bottom left), at our lunch spot.

Ruth at the bottom of the canyon.

Can you see Ruth beside that big boulder? It's funny, this picture looks crooked, but it's not. The wind sometimes blows the waterfall in different directions.

Always smiling. Well, not always. But most of the time!

We had fun crawling over the boulders and rocks at the bottom of the falls. But we still had quite a bit to hike! We wanted to take a different route back up so that we could go to the top of the falls themselves and look down!

The trail actually brought us above the top of the falls.

Yikes. Looking down.

The actual top of the waterfalls. Looking down on those huge boulders. They don't look so huge from up here!

Another angle.

Ruth, on the trail.

What a great day we had. In fact, it was pretty much perfect!

    1. We couldn't get over the difference from top to bottom. From the top it looks like a pile of stones and the stream but once you are down at the bottom the pile of stones are HUGE boulders and the stream is very steep itself with lots of smaller waterfalls. Definitely impressive!

    1. Nope, they were totally fine. We actually hiked all the way to the bottom and then all the way to the top on the other side and then after that we had to hike half way back down to connect with the path going back to where we started which meant half way back up again. We were very impressed with ourselves as we only had to take a few quick rest stops on the upward journey.
