The most interesting places we have ever camped

After seven years of RV'ing, we've overnighted in a lot of interesting places. The best and most interesting of them have not been in campgrounds. Isn't there a saying..? The best things in life area free?

Well not all of them have been free, but certainly a lot of them were.

Our regular readers know that we've spent a lot of time in Mexico, so of course quite a few of these pics are from that part of the world. Mexico offers some of the most interesting camping spots!

Camping in your motorhome on a boat!

Definitely interesting was the 17 hour overnight ferry ride from La Paz in the Baja to Mazatlan on the Mexico mainland. They actually put Sherman on a huge elevator that brought us up to the top level of the ferry. And they even plugged us in to 120v electricity.

Free camping at the beach is always good...

Free camping at Barra del Tordo on the east coast at the Gulf of Mexico.

We spent a couple of nights in a farmer's field. The cows didn't seem to mind!

Kevin, and our friend Steve, playing backgammon with the cows.

Sherman, parked in the greenery!

Definitely one of the best places we've ever stayed was our friend Kathe's property near Chetumal, Mexico and the Belize border. What a beautiful spot!  We spent two weeks there.

The best wrong turn that we ever made led us to a great free camping spot by the Rio Colotopec near Puerto Escondido...

Planned on spending one night and ended up there for over a week!

Free camping at Steel Creek Park, Lake Whitney, Texas.

One time, we were traveling through the mountains near Morelia, Mexico and we spotted a dirt road leading into the pine forest. We hadn't planned on stopping for the night, but that road led to a cell tower and there was a perfect spot for Sherman to get into. If we hadn't been low on fresh water we would have stayed longer!

Free camping in the mountains near Morelia.

Watching the Pacific ocean crash to the shore at a secluded beach in Michoacan, Mexico.

There is some fantastic free camping available in Nova Scotia!

One of the best sites we ever got at a paid campground was this one in Meat Cove, Nova Scotia.

Not many people have ever RV'd at a Mexican National park. This is at Parque Nacional Laguna de Zapotlan.

And most recently...

A free site with a view overlooking Mexico's Copper Canyon.

Another great view, from site #11 at Burnt Corral Recreation Area, Arizona.

So...which one is your favorite...?

I'm putting up the same Amazon link today because I can't believe that only one person bought one yesterday. Seriously? You all have super sharp kitchen knives? I find that hard to believe. This is a great deal. This item sells for $54 here in Canada....our American readers can buy it for only $11.99...

  4. Very nice! I guess you would have to be careful exiting the motorhome in the dark where the cows are right outside the door, perhaps leaving cow pies here and there:)

    1. Yep, you definitely would. The cows woke us up one night from them licking the salt off the bikes that were attached to the rear of the motorhome making the motorhome wiggle around, it was too funny!

    1. That is a great spot, it was pretty windy when we were there but oh so quiet.

  6. I once questioned Amazon about the usurious difference in pricing between their US and Canadian sites. They actually replies to tell me they run the two sites as two separate companies, each deciding on their own pricing. So, how can they defend ripping off Canadian customers? Shipping? Import duties? Nothing supports the huge price difference in such a small item.

Great overnighting spots by the way! Makes my feet itch!

  8. My fave photo is of Kevin and friend and the cows! Reminds me of the video for the song "Sweet Dreams (are made of this)" by Eurythmics.

    1. We really enjoyed that spot. The farmer had 10 children and the younger ones would come by for a visit with us and fetch us fresh coconuts from the trees, watch us play cards, we love experiences like that and the beach was just a 5 minute walk through a coconut grove.

  9. Wow you guys have really had some fantastic isolated water spots. I love everyone of them. Free isolated spot by big water is absolutely the top of my list. Amazing finds for sure. Well done!!

    1. They gave us power and let us sleep in them overnight for the crossing, plus we had dog at the time and we were allow to bring her out onto the deck but she didn't like it out there, I think it was too noisy for her. we were also given meal tickets for both dinner and breakfast the next morning. Totally great experience. Here is our post from that trip. www.travelwithkevinandruth.com/2008/02/getting-on-ferry-to-mazatlan.html
