Most people, on their last day of work, would be relaxing and not getting anything done. That is not the situation here at the park. A lot of last minute stuff happening here today.
So...a neat story to tell you from yesterday evening.
We slept in the motorhome last night. It was going to be chilly (down to 2C, 35F) so at around 7:00pm I headed over there from our house trailer to put the heat on in Sherman. I opened the sliding door to our front porch. The sun had already gone down, but as I stepped outside, I noticed some kind of dark object that stood out over on the other side of the playground.
Huh? No way...it couldn't be.
I actually had to do a double take.
I quickly and quietly snuck back inside to tell Ruth..."Honey...there's a moose!!"
I grabbed the camera and we both tried to quietly go outside. But he had already spotted us and was making his way fairly slowly towards the marina.
I quickly tried to take a couple of pictures, but they were really blurred. Then I though I would try a video. So I did, but I totally forgot that the memory card had gone bad the other day (it literally fell apart when I took it out of the camera) and so there was no memory card in the camera! There is an extremely small built in memory...enough for five or six pictures. So, I deleted the ones I had taken to make room for hopefully something better.
But it wasn't meant to be.
It was too dark, and we didn't want to get too close. He never stopped moving, and he got in the water and swam over to our little island in the marina where we could hear him happily munching on shrubs. Couldn't see him though!
So while I can't supply proof of our moose sighting here at the park, I'll show you some pics of moose that we have seen over the years...
A young bull moose at the side of the road in Algonquin Park, Ontario. May 2005.
A large female moose on the Whispering Pines Nature Trail at Cypress Hills Provincial Park at the Saskatchewan/Alberta border. October 2007.
A young moose on the Clyburn Valley Trail in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Ingonish Beach, Nova Scotia. June 2008.
This light colored female had a very new calf with her lying in the bushes. She was not happy to have us so close but we didn't see her until we actually were that close. We quickly backed away. This was at the end of the Branch Pond Lookoff Trail in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park near Broad Cove, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. June 2011.

Nice surprise to actually see a moose.
ReplyDeleteKeep warm and hit the road soon.
We were thrilled to see a moose in the campground. Hopefully we can see it again next year.
DeleteVery cool. By the way, has the dog you were caring for over the summer gone or??
ReplyDeleteYes, Cassie the Jack Russell belonged to one of the ladies who ran the canteen this year. The canteen closed on Labour Day weekend, so Cassie has been gone since then.
DeleteIs this a Moose tail?
ReplyDeleteLol, nope, we really saw one and it's tail! :-)
DeleteNice. In 53 days in Canadian eastern provinces, we only saw three moose and had no really good pictures either-so I believe you:))
ReplyDeleteThe only time we saw moose in the Maritimes was in Nova Scotia up in Cape Breton Highlands Nat'l Park while on hikes. I've been to Newfoundland twice and never saw a moose and apparently it is impossible to go to Newfoundland and not see one! Just our luck!
