It couldn't be worse...

Labor Day weekend is supposed to be the last hurrah for the camping season. Where the park is full of people enjoying one last session around the campfire before everyone heads back to work and school.

But this year is messed up.

When we were kids, you always went back to school on the Tuesday following Labor Day weekend.

Well this year, the powers that be here in Saskatchewan decided that kids would go back to school last Tuesday. Something about not being able to cram all the learning into a school year that was shorter by four days.

So as it was, we only had 13 reservations for this weekend. Now to be fair, many people would wait until the last minute and if the weather had been looking great we likely would have had a fairly busy weekend here at the park.

But the weather is not great. In fact, it couldn't be much worse!

Yikes. Only a high of 9C (48F) on Sunday.

They've actually been forecasting this for a couple of days now, and 6 of our 13 reservations have already called to cancel. Can't say I blame them!

Since we did kind of see this coming, I did all my grass cutting yesterday. And, I made some room in the shop so that I can pull most of Sherman inside so I can at least get some work done to him over the next couple of days. He doesn't totally fit, but most of him is out of the rain.

When we were in town earlier this week, I bought a windshield chip repair kit. This stupid insurance inspection that Sherman has to go to on Tuesday is very fussy about windshield stuff and there was one chip that I didn't think would pass, but if it was repaired it just might.

I had never put a lot of faith in these do-it-yourself kits, but this one had pretty good reviews on the Canadian Tire website and now that I've done it myself I'm fairly impressed. I should have taken some before and after pics! Anyhow, if you can follow the fairly detailed instructions exactly, I don't see why anybody can't do this themselves.

Oh...so I fired up the motorhome yesterday. He's been sitting for over 4 months, so it's always a great feeling when you turn the key and  he's raring to go! (Turn up your volume!)

  1. Sure would have liked to have seen those before/aft photos of your windshield chip fix :(

    1. Yeah, sorry... I wasn't thinking! Now that I've seen it work, I think I might fix one that we've got in the little blue car as well. Might wait until spring though!

I think some of the poor reviews on Amazon are related to people expecting the product to do more than it's designed to do. Also, perhaps people expecting the results to be perfect, whereas there will always be some type of imperfection. But I've seen many chips repaired by the pros and they are never perfect. I'm happy that the result is better than it was before.

  2. I used the blue star kit last December and easy to use and does a decent job as well. Still holding too.

    1. Good to here that it is still holding for you George, hope that we will have the same luck.

  3. Your weekend forecast looks a lot like our July in Newfoundland:(

    1. Having weather like this in July is not a fun thing! I remember when we were in Newfoundland many, many years ago the weather was damp as well. I think that we were lucky a few days though when we have decent weather and that was near the end of July if I am not mistaken.

  4. I think the best you can do with any "chip repair" process, whether do it yourself or hired out, is to stop the chip from becoming a crack. If it looks like it almost never happened, then that's a bonus. I've only ever had it done once, it was about seventy bucks, which is a far cry from that Amazon price, but certainly worth it to me.

    1. I agree with you Bob but unfortunately it had already started to crack within half and hour of happening. Darn, Saskatchewan roads! ;-) We are really hoping that it will past the test. (fingers crossed) Yep, our $16 is certainly cheaper than what it would cost to have someone else repair it.

  5. I will try this product to fix a chip caused by some jackass shooting a pellet gun at my car.

    1. I hope you were able to find the guy that was shooting at your car, if you were, have them pay for the repair. :-( How frustrating!

  6. I have fixed lots of rock chips and while they are not perfect, none have gone to cracks using the same product. We took it to Alaska with us and even fixed my sister-in-laws motorhome windshield.

  7. I guess you might get more rest this weekend than you thought, no late night outdoor parties with that weather. I am a big believer in chip repairing - makes your windshields last years and years longer.

    1. Yes, it seems like we are getting a bit of rest this weekend. I get out when it's not raining and get a few things done and Kevin has been up in the shop under cover getting thing done up there. I think on the real diehards were out partying last night and with no one really here that wasn't an issue for us. It's really a shame to have the summer end on this note though.

  8. I liked your video and enthusiasm today. Have you ever thought of becoming a motivational speaker? Never mind because you already are a motivator through your blog. Thanks!

    1. Thanks gumo! I do think Kevin would do a wonderful job as a motivational speaker as well. :-)

  9. We've luckily never had chips in our windows just the stupid pitting and stuff that particles in the air and uncovered gravel trucks do. Wish I could just use some sandpaper to smooth them out. They cause glare and halos. Glad you were able to get yours taken care of. Hope Sherman passes his test.

    1. Yeah, I think at that point when it gets bad enough then you will just have to replace the windshield. Too bad they haven't come out with some kind of liquid/solution that can be wiped over the windshield and fill those tiny little spots. We hope that he will pass too.

  10. Was that really the first time you turned Sherman's key in four months? With the battery at just 85% charge, that was quite impressive!

    1. Yep, first time in four months. I had even checked the starter battery and it was at 12.4 volts.
