Boondocking night #3...quiet as can be!

An overcast day yesterday, but warm enough and we never did see any rain. We did 133 miles (213 kms), which is still slightly lower than we need to be doing on average.

But...we made it into South Dakota, a new state for us! And, we're kind of excited that we're headed for Mount Rushmore this afternoon. Always wanted to see that.

I had read about a Custer National Forest campsite called Picnic Spring just below the North Dakota border. It was 8 miles off the road, so that's about the maximum we want to travel to find a campsite. There is no point in spending $10 in gas to find a free campsite.

Typical Dakotas scenery.

An interesting roadside display!

The road in to Custer National Forest.

There are 8 sites here with picnic tables and firepits, but several were already taken and the others weren't very level. More geared towards tenters. However, there is a fairly large level parking area for some group sites, so we just set ourselves up right there.

Another view.

There was some kind of air force training going on in the sky high above us. There were two of these fairly large jets doing wide circles and they would pass above us every 5 minutes or so. Fairly loud, and we didn't think they would ever stop. But by the time the sun went down, they were done.

Zoomed in as close as I could get!

Out for a hike. We did a couple of miles after my afternoon nap!

It's at around 3,400 ft in the pine trees. Nice setting.

And, quiet as can be. I remember waking up at some point in the middle of the night and couldn't hear a sound. Nice and peaceful.

Yesterday's drive 133 miles (213 kms).

Again, we got up this morning and started driving around 7:00am. We've already made it to Belle Fourche, South Dakota and have plans on visiting Mount Rushmore this afternoon. We've got to start doing some more miles, so maybe we'll put in a couple more hours driving this afternoon.

    1. We went first thing morning to see Crazy Horse as we were driving right by it but turned right around when we saw the $22 US charge for the two of us to get in. Sorry but that is just too much for us. We would like to have seen it but not at that price.

    2. There is a place you can see it from the highway for FREE. We just happened upon it and were able to stop the car and get a couple of good photos. Just serendipity! We wouldn't have paid the $22 either!

    3. We will have to find that spot from the highway. We were able to see a bit of the profile of Crazy Horse from the road but not the whole thing. You will have to let us know where this "spot" is located. ;-)

  3. You were watching B-1 Bombers probably from Ellsworth AFB, SD close to Rushmore.

    1. Our boondocking spot was so quiet it was wonderful! Mount Rushmore was cool to see and it is amazing how the faces were carved in the mountain but be prepared to walk or pay $11 for parking.

    1. No we didn't. One we didn't know that we would be able to see it from there and two even if we did know to look, it was drizzly and very overcast so I really doubt that we would have been able to see it in that kind of weather.

  6. We live close to two air bases and a naval air station: We just think of the flight noise and air and ground weapons training as the sound of freedom:)

    1. I would image that it is much like living near the city airport or near busy train tracks, you just get used to it after a while.

    1. No, unfortunately we didn't see the light show, it would have been nice but we don't like to drive at night and we would still have to find a spot to park for the night but we did see it and that was the important part.
