Boondocking night #6...does it get any better?

A bit of a longer drive yesterday, at 179 miles (286 kms). It was hot, in fact we saw thermometer signs in two different towns...one said 89F (32C) and one said 91F (33C). Definitely shorts and t-shirts weather!

We purposely planned a longer driving day in order to get ahead of ourselves a bit. Hopefully this afternoon (Sunday) we will make it to the town of McCook, Nebraska where we have read that they have a very nice free city RV park that has showers and all the amenities. Only 7 sites, so hopefully there's a vacant one for us! Anyhow, we're due for a day off so if everything works out, we'll take a break from driving on Monday and just explore the town and relax.

We did another hike yesterday morning at the Toadstool Park, so here's a couple more pics from that interesting locale...

Ruth, having fun!

Sittin' on a toadstool!

What a neat place!

More little toadstools.

Can you see Ruth?

We got on the road and did some driving. We had read about an oddball attraction near the town of Alliance, Nebraska, so we made a short detour to check it out. Worth the stop for a couple of photos, but I don't think we would have gone out of our way tooooo much.

This...is Carhenge!

You've probably heard of Stonehenge, the ancient rock monument in southwestern England. Well I guess some guy back in the 1980's had nothing better to do, so he built this monument to the fallen automobiles of Detroit. Apparently it used to include a few imports, but they were dragged away a long time ago! Free to stop in and have a look. In the busy season, they have a little visitor's center and gift shop open as well.

I saw a listing on www.ultimatecampgrounds.com for a wildlife management area that said "free dispersed camping", and you never quite know what that means as far as accessibility goes. But, Sherman is adventurous and always up to a challenge, so we figured we'd do the 3 mile dirt road drive to check it out.

Most of the drive was okay, but then the road narrowed quite a bit. We finally came to a spot where we could turn around and we saw another vehicle parked there. Fine for an SUV, but not real good for a motorhome! A man and woman were letting their two dogs go for a swim, and I got out and asked what was further on. He said that the road just continues to get rougher, but if we go back to the last turn off we would find a nice flat spot to park for the night. Nice.

The entrance road to our spot.

So we got turned around, but the entrance to the last turn off was a bit rough. I walked in there, and sure enough there was a nice level spot. Let's go for it.

Sherman's back end dragged a bit getting over the first hump, but after that he was fine. And, it was worth it!

Great boondocking spot! GPS 41.29984, -102.07699

Great deal on a professional style carpet cleaner this morning...

Bissell DeepClean Professional Pet Carpet Cleaner

And on Amazon.ca, a fantastic deal on top quality rechargeable drill and impact driver. If American's can get this to ship to the U.S., the exchange rate difference makes this an even better deal...

  1. Carhenge was on my original plans as we headed south but we're not going that way now. Thanks for the pictures. I may someday plot us down that way but after seeing the pictures I wouldn't make it a highlight of the trip.

    1. Carhenge was an OK stop but we certainly wouldn't recommend going out of your way to see it. Having said that the town of Alliance seemed to be a pretty little town.

  2. Your header photo is awesome.
A neat place is right. Love the rock formations.
Another blog I follow was just visiting Carhenge. What a cool place.

    1. We really enjoyed all the different formations there and looking for fossils. They also have a trail that is 3 miles long that takes you out of the park and down a dry river bed to a bison kill area and bone bed and is supposed to be very interesting but the visitor center there is closed for the season so I doubt that you get access to that at this time of year.

    1. It was a pretty area but boy did the mosquitoes come out at sunset. We had to close everything up. Luckily they we didn't seem to get any of them in Sherman so we had no problems sleeping at night.

    1. That was such a cool looking area just of the Bison Trail. If I wasn't in the picture it would have almost looked like one of those ancient cities you see in the middle east somewhere.

  6. There is another free city park just outside Dodge City, Kansas 200mi ahead. You can "get out of Dodge" and camp for free! (Of course, since I actually own a Dodge, I "get out of Dodge" every time I park it.)

    1. Lol, love your "get out of Dodge" comment!

Thanks for the suggestions but we will actually be a little more west of Dodge City.

  7. We've been known to drag our backside getting into that perfect spot, too! Great place to spend the night. I'll wager that you'll find the city park pretty much empty. Good luck. Hope it all works out perfect for you!

    1. As long as it only drags gently across, we are OK with that, especially to get that perfect site. On the way out Kevin put more air in the rear suspension bags and that really helped out, we didn't drag on the way out.

The city park actually had several others there for the night and quite a few that came in to dump their tanks.

  8. Love those toadstools. That place is on my list. Sherman is definitely very adventurous and so is his driver. Nice spot. Not sure why I can't get in to Ultimate campgrounds.

Are you trying to access the Ultimate campgrounds from your computer or your phone/tablet?

    1. This last overnight spot was very pretty but the mosquitoes were really bad at sunset and we had to close everything up so they couldn't get in.

    1. Yes, we really loved the Toadstool area. Lots of interesting things to look at. The overnight spot was great and so peaceful but we did have to close Sherman all up at dusk as the mosquitoes came out in swarms!
