Amazing scenery at Colombia's Tatacoa Desert (part 2)

We're in Bogota now (that story will come tomorrow morning!), but we still wanted to continue this morning's post. So you might want to read that first if you haven't already. It's available here...

http://www.travelwithkevinandruth.com/2015/11/a-bumpy-ride-to-colombias-spectacular.html

Okay...so if you've read that part we can now continue with our desert tour!

There were five stops on the tour and we're now coming up on stop number three...

Remember how we've been telling you how lush and green Colombia is?

Not this part of Colombia!

Well, there is a little bit of green in those cacti.

Fantastic scenery. Too bad it's so hot!

I would have liked to have come back in the early morning hours.

I like this photo.

Colombia's Tatacoa Desert.

Didn't see any wildlife, but we did spot a few birds.

Now this is a bumpy ride!

Somebody found a natural underground spring and decided to build a swimming pool. Not sure how many customers they get out here in the middle of nowhere.

This part of the desert is much different than where we were a half hour earlier.

Okay, that's enough photos. Hope you enjoyed our tour of Colombia's Tatacoa Desert!

And in Canada...

  1. So beautiful! Reminds me of a cross between the Badlands (North or South Dakota) and Bryce Canyon NP in Utah! Just curious; you mention how hot it is, but in the photos in Part 1, you were wearing quite a lot of clothing. Is that because it cools down so much when the sun sets? Kevin, I hope you can get the medical attention you need and some relief. What a shame that both you and Ruth have had health issues on this wonderful trip!

    1. Yes, that would be a good description of the desert here.

It does cool down somewhat out in the desert but not a lot. We are wearing long clothing for several reasons one, to keep the sun off of us, we don't like to use sun screen, we think the chemicals in it are just as bad for you as the UV rays. Secondly the locals don't wear shorts often, well maybe the younger ones but not so much the older ones. We stand out enough as tourists we don't like to bring even more attention to ourselves.Last reason at least for Kevin was to keep his rash covered.

  2. It reminds me of the badlands in Alberta at Drumheller, like the previous commenter had mentions the USA ones. At least you saw birds!

    1. Very much like the badlands both in Drumheller and in other parts of the US. The area where the pool is reminded us of Toadstool Geological Park in Nebraska that we visited in October. We saw a couple of beautiful hawks but they wouldn't pose for us. :-(

    1. There are actually two deserts in Colombia, the other one is up near the Colombia and Venezuela border.

We hope so too, the cooler air is already feeling very refreshing.

  5. It's like Arizona, desert in one area, pine trees in another. I never knew Colombia could be so diverse. What an amazing country. Good luck with the rash.

    1. Yes, Colombia is very diverse. Don't forget the Amazon down in the far east corner of the country and the all coastline that we won't even be seeing. We need more time!

    1. It wasa natural pool at one time they just developed it into a proper pool. Apparently at on point in time this whole desert was an ocean and there are still pockets of water that push itself to the surface.
