Lunch at the local market

We went for a walk around town. Dolores Hidalgo (pop 55,000) is not a huge place and we really didn't have a plan on where we were going, we just simply walked the streets until we got hungry enough to stop for lunch.

And what a great lunch we had!

As we walked, I had my eyes open looking for the oldest church in town. It was supposedly built in 1755...but we're still not sure that we found it, and if we did we're not sure that we did! Two of the churches we were in had no indication of the name of the church. I like when they put up a plaque or something giving some info on the building, but that was nowhere to be found.

Very plain interior, but fantastic stonework.

A statue of Miguel Hidalgo, rallying the people to independence.

Nice park. Hardly anybody around, although the streets themselves were pretty busy.

Back at the central plaza...the Casa de Visitas.

The Casa de Visitas is the home where the two representatives of Spanish rule lived in Dolores Hidalgo. On September 16, 1810, they became the first two prisoners of the independence movement. Today, it is where Mexican dignitaries stay when visiting the city for ceremonies.

The courtyard of the Casa de Visitas.

The city of Dolores Hidalgo is actually quite famous for it's pottery factories. We didn't visit any this time around because we had done so four years ago when we visited the outskirts of town when we had our little blue car with us. You can read that post here...

Just walking down the street.

We were getting hungry and were looking for a restaurant that one of our facebook readers had suggested. We found the right address, but no restaurant! So we looked for something else. Eventually we came to the main market building, and there is always a section of the main market that is designated for eating. The food is always inexpensive, and you simply try to pick the busiest one. That usually has the best food!

Each of us ordered a plate of chicken enchiladas, and we split a large fresh orange juice.

Total bill was 105 pesos ($8.30 CAD) for the two of us. Delicious, and we were stuffed!

Afterwards, we walked around the market. Bought a bag of strawberries for 15 pesos ($1.20 CAD) and then came across this broccoli truck...

A big head of broccoli for 5 pesos (40 cents CAD).

Back to the motorhome where I had a nap and then we played a few more rounds of backgammon. Now 37-35 for me...pretty close race so far in the 2016 season!

After supper we walked back down to the central plaza, expecting all of the lights to be on...but they weren't. And, there was hardly anybody around because it was actually quite chilly. We snapped a couple of photos and didn't linger. Got back to the motorhome and my ears were cold!

The parroquia at night.

Don't want to overstay our welcome here at the municipal auditorium, plus we've seen everything we wanted to here in Dolores Hidalgo. So we're heading out this morning. But we don't plan on going far...there's a balneario only about 6 kms (3.7 miles) north of town and I've read they allow overnight RV parking.

    1. Very walkable town and colourful.

We have to thank Chris for that wonderful spot, he is the one that told us about it. :-)

  4. Very nice picture of Ruth. Lunch looks amazing, I wish we had a decent Mexican restaurant around here, only ones that are no where near the real thing (except for a seasonal taco cart that is only open in summer, they rock).

    1. Lunch was delicious! Totally agree with you about finding a decent Mexican restaurant in Canada, even in the States it can be difficult. If they don't serve corn tortillas then it isn't authentic, in our mind. Sounds like you have a least found a good go to spot for tacos in the summer. :-)

  5. To just start walking around town is what we like to do too. Lunch looks great! I really appreciated the nice wide sidewalks in Dolores.

    1. That's what we like too Peter. No special destination in mind, just wander around and it is amazing what you can find and see. Yes, the sidewalks here are much better than San Miguel for walking on. I love the different stone patterns on the streets too!

Lunch was delicious, still could have been a little bit spicier for us though, we much be turning into Mexicans! ;-)

  6. We have been here twice and it seems we can't leave without some pottery. A few years ago we bought 3 large pots and we had to "seat belt" them into our back seat of the truck.

    1. Because our home is the motorhome we really can't buy much as we just don't have the room. Last time we were here though, we bought a nice sala bowl which we still have and love. I gets used almost everyday. We are trying to keep our eyes open for a nice water dispenser though for those big bottles of water.

  7. Delores Hidalgo looks awesome. I just love towns like this. No fancy anything, just normal people living their normal lives.

    1. You have described Dolores Hidalgo to a "T". We love visiting towns like this, it isn't nearly as touristy as near by San Miguel either. In fact most of the tourists that we saw were Mexicans.

    1. The markets are one our favourite things about traveling no matter where we go. Well maybe not so much in Canada and the U.S. as we find they are generally more expensive than the supermarkets rather than less expensive, like just about anywhere else in the world.

  10. Looking good Ruth ! Love the tile floors in the church and I would love to visit the Hidalgo shop. I have a couple pieces that I bought in Bisbee and believe it or not 2 from a thrift store in Ontario Canada. Wow ! that broccoli..what a cheap price.

    1. Yes, the tiles are pretty aren't they?! It was so interesting watching them make the pottery and then hand paint it all. Really incredible how much work goes into making all that pottery.

Loved the broccoli truck, hoping it is there again when we go back through the town tomorrow.
