I remember back in 2007 when we were first offered the opportunity to RV in Mexico. In all honesty, the thought of driving a motorhome into Mexico had simply never occurred to us!
And so let's take a look at the thinking behind some of these people's decisions...
Next up is Stan (76) and Colleen (62) from near San Diego, California.
Stan and Colleen, and their dog Maybe.
As in, maybe we'll keep her, and maybe we won't!
Stan and Colleen have an interesting history in that they drove a truck and trailer all the way down to the southern tip of South America back in 1996. They sold it there, and flew back to the U.S.
What prompted you to do an RV caravan to Mexico?
Despite the fact that we've done a lot of traveling alone, we wanted to try something new. We're also getting a little older, and wanted the security and safety in numbers that a caravan offers.
What are your impressions of the caravan?
We love the day trip and bus tours, and also the dinners and lunches out that were included in the price. The only downside in our opinion was a little lack of planning when the tours were organized on back to back days.
What are your impressions of Mexico?
We love Mexico! It's beautiful, and we love the friendly people and colorful towns.
Have you felt safe traveling around Mexico?
Yes - absolutely.
What has been your favorite experience or highlight of the trip?
Doing the longest zip line in the world at the Copper Canyon. Also meeting Zorro in El Fuerte, and of course all of the wonderful new friends in the caravan.
Would you return to Mexico by yourself or with another caravan?
Both!

And next we have Paul and Fran, from the little town of Fergus, Ontario just north of Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo...
Paul, Fran, and their dog Max!
This is Paul and Fran's second Mexico RV caravan trip, with the same company.
What prompted you to do an RV caravan to Mexico?
We think that RV caravan travel gives you the opportunity to see and do things that you wouldn't normally be able to see. And, we learned that we love traveling with the group and have a lot of fun with them.
What are your impressions of the caravan?
Great way to travel and learn about the network of roads in Mexico.
What are your impressions of Mexico?
We love Mexico, the people, their culture, the food, and the diverse landscape and terrain.
Have you felt safe traveling around Mexico?
We have always felt safe in Mexico. We do not put ourselves in an unsafe environment.
What has been your favorite experience or highlight of the trip?
It is hard to pick just one...or two or three!
- The mescal town in the mountains
- The drive from Mazatlan to Durango
- Dinner at Jacob Domingues home near Cuitzeo was very memorable.
Would you return to Mexico by yourself or with another caravan?
We would return by ourselves or with others traveling to the same destinations. A caravan to a different area would also be an option for us.
How long is Stan and Colleens coach? I'm figuring our 40 footer will be a problem at times.
ReplyDeleteMark
We believe it is a 32' coach but one of the couples have a 42' one and they have found it to be too big for some of the parks that we have gone to and just driving it on some of the Mexican roads. The smaller the unit the more possibilities!
Deleteinteresting to read of the people that take caravans, do any of them have a website?
ReplyDeleteGlad you have been enjoying it. One of the couples have a blog but it isn't up to date yet but it is at www.buckmasterrvingmexico.blogspot.com there is also the blog from the caravan website at www.mexicorvbuddies.com/Spring2016.php
DeleteWould be interesting for your followers (blog) to hear your answers to some of those same questions - how "bout anin depth "self" interview?
ReplyDeleteYes, that is an idea but most of our readers know what our answers to those questions would be, but we could certainly do an interview of our own as well. Maybe what we should do is as our readers what questions they would like us to answer about ourselves!
DeleteThe caravans are nice but we find more expensive than we like to pay. And travelling in Mexico is always a great experience.
ReplyDeleteYes, caravans are expensive but they also include lots of meals and activities that many people would never do on their own and for many of the people in this caravan it gave them comfort in numbers and lots of new friends which many people would not get on their own, especially for their first driving experience in Mexico. Many people who come to Mexico come to one spot and stay in that spot for the entire winter and never see what else is out there, whereas these people get to see many areas and then in following years have a better idea of where they may want to stay or explore. Caravans are certainly not for everyone!
DeleteIts not as expensive as you think when you see what you get. RV Aprks in mexico are not as cheap as think they are, some as much as $35 US a night. This particualr compnay is about 30% cheaper than the 2 main US based companies as it is a Mexican registered company and can legally do its own tours, not contract them out. In fact it does the tours for many other RV caravan companies. That means its ocmpetitors are also its customers, so we do not run caravans on the same route at the same times. Since it has no middlemen & relies on word of mouth, web searches, and modest advertising, it can keep its prices quite a bit lower. WE probably will be doing our first Yucatan route caravan in Jan 2018, with a maximum of 10 rigs. Chances are Kevin & Ruth will be the Wagon Masters. No guaranee of that yet, but they have first refusal. That one will be first come, first serve by those who express interest on the web site (www.mexicocaravan.com). We have one already. I will be scouting out the route for it next spring to figure out where to stop, how long, price, etc. It will probably run out of Laredo, and loop through the Yucatan & Chiapas & back north
