Goodbye Sherman!

See you in two months! Behave yourself, and be a good boy!

That's what I was thinking to myself as Sherman drove away with our motorhome exchange friends Graham and Tana. We had just finished doing an in depth tour of Sherman and detailed all of his different operations wth them, and they were ready to take off on their two month exploration of western Canada.

Although I've kept him in good shape, he is a 20 year old motorhome and you just never know what might break and when. We've been pretty lucky over the years with him not leaving us stranded. I think the biggest problem was a couple of years ago in Mexico when the starter went bad. But, despite the possibility of problems, we wouldn't have hesitated to hop into him today and take off for Mexico. So, I'm sure he'll be fine.

Meanwhile, our son has been on a two week adventure of his own in Iceland and Norway.

There's a difficult 23 km (14 mile) round trip hike in the mountains that goes to a huge rock that juts out over a fjord. It's become a fairly popular  hike despite the fact that it's relatively dangerous and strenuous. A 24 year old girl died there last September. It's a hike that Ruth and I want to do at some point, but our son takes after us with his travel and adventure spirit, and he made it there first!

I stole this photo from his facebook page, so it's not the best quality.

My dad always wanted to visit Norway, but he never made it there. I think of him whenever I see pictures like this! Glad our son was able to make it.

Rainy day here at Cabri Park today. I've got a couple of indoor projects to tackle though, so that's fine. Plus, the grass needed some watering anyhow.

  1. I don't know about you but, the first time I saw our motorhome drive off with someone else at the wheel, I could feel my heart rate increase ever so slightly. Hope all goes well with Sherman. It sucks to get "the call".

    1. Yep, I think we had a tear in our eyes too as he drove away without us. :-( I am sure he will behave himself for Graham and Tana. We had certainly done everything that we could to make sure he is mechanically sound, inside and out.

  2. Sherman will have a great time with his British friends. The picture of Alex just gives me the creeps...

    1. I am sure he will and it certainly beats sitting the summer up by the workshop collecting dust!

Lol, Kevin and I want to be right where he is one day. :-)

    1. No, either can we. We will be teetotalers when we visit there!

  4. I have been to Norway many times, but sure would like to see a lot more of Iceland besides the airport:)

    1. We have never been to Norway but it is high on our list and we would love to go back to Iceland. The 5 days that we spent there back in 2012 was not nearly enough time.

  5. I would never let anyone else drive my RV for fear of them causing damage by backing into something, cutting a corner too tightly, or hitting a tree branch overhead.
Did your insurance rates change by allowing the RV to be driven by people not in your household?

    1. There's at least one website for renting your rv. They have an insurance partner that sells commercial insurance. Fortunately my RV is older than Sherman, and paid for, so I don't need to do that either. As we all know, there's just too many ways to screw up with an RV...

    2. And if I had a newer RV, I might have thought the same way. Glad that ours is older and we don't have to worry so much.

No, no difference in insurance. We are with Saskatchewan government insurance in Canada, and it's the same as if you simply lent it to a friend. In fact, we could even rent it out and it would have only cost an extra premium of $15!

    3. And keep in mind that these people are also experienced RV'ers themselves. And, that they are taking the same risk in letting us use their RV for the same length of time. It's a shared risk, and worth it in our opinion in order to do some RV'ing in another country at a much lesser cost than renting.

  6. Oh my, I can't believe he is dangling his legs off that rock! What a great picture. I am sure your friends and Sherman will be fine. At least you are in Canada should they run into any issues in the next 2 months.

    1. He must have nerves of steel. I know I would have a hard time doing that too but I would like to try at least.

Even being in Canada doesn't help if they have a problems when you could be a 1,000km or more away. It's not like we could pop over to fix something. All we could do it talk them through it, which could be done from anywhere. Hopefully though, there won't be any problems. :-)

  7. My jaw dropped when I found Alex mid-picture. On that rock. Yep, he surely does take after you!

  8. We just came back from a 7 week adventure in Portugal. It is a Boondockers heaven. We didn't have an rv but everywhere we went saw so many places to park, very rv friendly. If you are thinking of Portugal a blog that we found very useful was by Julie Dawn Fox.

    1. That's good to know. We have visited the whole bottom portion of Portugal back in 2007 but that was before we ever started RVing so looking for boondocking spots wasn't something that we had our eyes pealed out for. We will try to find this blog and have a look at it thanks!

  9. A good maintenance program always pays off. Sherman is proof of that! :c)

    1. Thank you Paul and Marti, we sure try to keep Sherman in tip-top shape and fix things before they break. We are pretty confident that he won't give them any problems.
