What's the best way to get rid of mice?

With a cat!

And that's what we got yesterday. Obviously we can't keep a cat full time, so the agreement was made that we've got the cat until September when we'll try and give it away. And if we can't give it away, the lady who gave it to us will take it back.

So now mice...look out!

He's about three months old and we've named him Coho. Like the salmon, because he's got a bit of a pink hue to him.

He purrs like crazy!

But he's still a little shy. He likes it underneath this chair.

He was sick a couple of times overnight though. Maybe just nerves and stress from moving to a new house. He was an outdoor cat and he's never been inside before. He's eating though, and using the litter box so that's a good thing.

Still working on water pump problems here at the park. It's mostly related to the widely fluctuating water levels. On Friday, I had moved the pump into the bay because the water level was finally high enough and they were forecasting it to rise another 10 inches by the end of this week. But instead, yesterday a strong west wind came up an the water dropped by over two feet! Very frustrating...

The water literally disappeared in about three hours yesterday!
You can see the intake line sitting in  the mud!

This morning, it's rising again.

    1. Lol, no but I think he must be close by because this has happened several times over the last few days!

  2. Too funny, that's the reason we have a cat! And it does take some time for them to adjust to a new home. Our cat was quite shy for a long time, then okay with us (and our dogs) and now finally pretty good with strangers.

    1. He is definitely starting to settle in now. He is still shy and frightened of big things and noises but he is starting to come to me when I sit on the floor. Not sure if he will ever be a cuddly cat though. Last night he had a good time playing and he has been very quiet at night. Don't think he has caught any mice yet though! ;-)

  3. Ronda and I as you know have dealt with mice and also had one that melted under the counter on a 115f day. I bought Rid Rite RR300XL (might have been RR303XL) and have never had mice again. In fact I bought 16 of them, when we aren't at the rig we place them in as many places as possible throughout the rig, and more in the kitchen area and we never have mouse poop in the rig any longer.

    1. Thanks Eric, we will keep that in mind if Coho can't do his job. Up until now we have been using peanut butter on a mouse trap but we have to keep emptying it out on a regular basis and we can still hear them in the walls.

  4. It is difficult to live without pets - nice the lady will take him back if you can't find a home for him in the fall. Very cute! Hopefully he will be a good mouser

    1. Yes, it is sometimes difficult not living with a pet when you have always had one in your life. However at this point in our life we really don't want to have a fulltime pet and all the responsibilities that go with one, so for us this is a great solution. Hopefully we can find a good home for him in the winter and then perhaps be able to have him back next summer, either way he will have a home for the winter. We are hoping he will be a good mouser too!

  5. Good luck with you new kitty, hopefully he takes care of the mice instead of playing with them like one of mine did years ago, lol...

    1. Thanks George! Yes,, hopefully he will be a mouser. Up until now he has been an outdoor/barn cat so I am sure his mamma has been teaching him how to hunt. Guess we will see as the summer progresses.

  6. Agree with 'awesome' above. He's a young cat that will probably play with any he finds! If he's indoor/outdoor, he might just bring one in-alive-as a present. BTDT. Also, that water level situation is truly weird!

    1. He has been an outdoor/barn cat only so hopefully him mom has been teaching how hunt, only time will tell!

Yes, the water level issue is definitely weird when the wind picks up from the west and sends the water down river bypassing our little bay and it is exceptionally more noticeable when the water level is this low. Hopefully it will improve in the coming weeks.

  7. We haven't had any mice in our new home as Oskar seems to be keeping them outdoors even though winter approaches. Coho looks very cute.

  8. Have fun with the cat. No really. They're sure cute and all, and good company. I can go and visit any number of cats or dogs as I please, so we are gloriously pet free. Also free of mice, although we did have a few unwanted visitors the first winter after we moved here. After getting the place buttoned up though, we fixed that. Good old fashioned Victor mouse traps are the most effective I find. Peanut butter on the bail with a little bit of string wrapped around. They get their teeth caught on the string. Works wonders. I still get them in the shed, so I'm never out of practice.

    1. Thanks Bob, we will enjoy him for the summer season but we aren't ready yet for a "fulltime" pet! Up until now we have been using the regular old mouse trap along with peanut butter minus the string (hadn't heard about that one!) and we have been catching them regularly but we still can hear them in between the walls some nights. Hopefully Coho is a quick learner. ;-)
