We're a little behind the times!

Game of Thrones and Pokemon Go.

"Huh? What are you talking about?"

Well that's exactly what I was thinking as I randomly came across several references over the past week or so with regards to the phrase Pokemon Go.

Ever since we changed our lifestyle back in October of 2007, it seems we have a bit of a hard time keeping up with pop culture. It started of course with no longer owning a television.

Even though we are regularly on the internet, and I regularly check the news headlines to see what's going on in the world, we often find ourselves left behind when it comes to what's popular. It took us a long time to own a "smart phone", and even now it's hardly used for anything other than an alarm clock! We bought it for it's mapping capabilities while traveling, although it's a handy source of general internet while traveling too.

And of course we had seen the many online references to the HBO television series "Game of Thrones". It's become a very popular series, not only in the U.S., but internationally as well.

But we don't own a TV.

Due to the magic of the internet (some of it not legal, I'm sure), we have always found a way while traveling to watch both Amazing Race and Survivor...two shows that we had regularly watched and enjoyed while we had a normal life. And we keep up with that today.

We heard so much recently about Game of Thrones that we decided to download the entire first season, and we've been watching that over the last couple of weeks. The first season came out in 2011!! Shows you how far behind the times we are! Anyhow, after we got through the first couple of episodes, it really does make you want to come back for more. Well acted and produced, with some interesting scenic locations...but pretty gruesome in the violence department.

So we're almost done the first season when I looked up that the show has just finished it's sixth season!

Yep, behind the times.

And so, have you heard about Pokemon Go yet? No? Well apparently you're the only one!

This new smart phone video game is free, and it was only released on July 6th. But already (in one week!) it has been downloaded 7.5 million times.

And yet, we seem to have no interest. Just like we had no interest in Game of Thrones back in 2011.

Maybe in 2020 I'll download the Pokemon Go app to see what all the fuss is about!

Last year when we were at the Quartzsite RV Show we bought one of these fold up picnic mats. At the end of the show, one of the sellers had them on clearout special for $5, so we picked one up. It's actually a picnic mat, but I've found that it's really handy to have for when I have to crawl under the RV for something. Now, you won't get it for $5, but it's still a pretty good deal here in Amazon...

You can even get one in Canada, however like usual it's a little more expensive...

    1. It took a few episodes before we really started to get into the show. Still get confused with a couple of the characters but we do like the show.

  2. Well, don't feel too bad. We didn't have "cable" in Austria, although we did have a TV, so ended up watching "Game of Thrones" when it was already in the third season or something like that.
Ashamed to admit it, got hooked.
Just don't get too attached to any one character. That's all I'll say. Have fun.

    1. Trust us we don't feel bad about being behind the times!

Yes, it seems to be the type of show that hooks you in. And, we know what you mean about not getting attached to a character and it is only the end of the first season!

  4. We don't watch much tv maybe the news in the morning the odd movie now and again, and maybe a detective show for a few minutes before I fall asleep at night And don't play games on the computer, I have no I-phone either, so guess I am really behind the times.
We do a lot of reading (free books) and puttering around, enough to keep us occupied.

    1. Nothing wrong with being behind the times! Having said that you guys have Kindles or something similar, we are still on the paper books. :-)

  5. I haven't watched the Game of Thrones either - too basic cable and now our cable has it but not the first few seasons so I don't want to watch it. We have netflix, maybe it will make it there one day.

    1. I am sure if it isn't already on Netflix it will be one day. Another good show that we have started watching is House of Cards, that is on Netflix.

  6. I guess we are dinosaurs because we have the "old fashioned" phones with no Internet or all the fancy stuff. We can make calls and text. I would say close to 100% of the people we see out walking anywhere, are looking down at their phones and now they are walking back and forth over and over in the park across from us, looking at their phones. We live at the foot of one of the most beautiful mountains in the U.S. and these people wander the town looking at their phones! I have to wonder how many mindless HOURS people spend looking at their phones. This newest "fad" just adds to the madness. People constantly staring at their phones are wasting their lives away (IMHO) Their children are pulling on them for attention, they are missing the scenery, sometimes even walking in front of cars, trains, and even planes (a guy lost his leg at Boeing because he was looking at his phone when he was supposed to be working and watching where he was going). Anyway, I think this whole Pokemon Go thing is ridiculous and a total waste of time!

    1. It's funny we have a "smart phone" yet very rarely (I mean rarely!) ever use the phone as a phone or even for texting. For us it is more of a tool for traveling.

I agree with you about looking at people and the majority of them have their face in their phones and not looking at what is around them. If they hurt themselves then we have absolutely no sympathy for them at all!

All I know about Pokemon Go is what I have seen on facebook and that is enough to turn me totally off of it. Just another way to waste time and energy in my opinion.

  7. You're living the dream! Who needs T.V? I usually only watch sport and documentaries. Unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with these shows so unable to comment further on the merits of them.

    1. Yep, we don't miss TV at all! Now the internet, that is a different story. :-)

Well actually there is one thing we do miss with TV, and that is watching American baseball. That is something that we really did enjoy but really the only time we feel that we are missing it, is when the World Series is on in the fall. I think this year we may actually be able to watch it as we will be visiting family then. :-)

  9. I saw the funniest things on Facebook. Instead of Pokemon Go, it was a lady talking about the latest app for adults....Chardonnay Go. It shows this lady running around finding glasses of wine she can drink every where. It was a hoot.

    1. Lol, now that would be my kind of game as long as there is a real glass of wine at the end! ;-)
