It's just the two of us now...

Our seasonal employee Valine had her last day of work on Sunday. Things start to quiet down here around this time of year and so she was scheduled to be finished now.

We also had two different gate staff helping through the busier period, but neither one of them lasted very long. Let's just say they didn't need the money very badly. At $12.60 an hour, you'd think it would be easy to find a teenager committed to the job, but apparently that's not the case.

And so it's just the two of us now to run the park for the rest of the season. That's what we've done the last two years, so we know that it's not a problem.

Just the two of us...and the dumb cat.

Coho hasn't been much of a mouser. Although I think we've pretty much got the mouse problem under control for now. And while he is kind of entertaining to have around, he is also annoying at times.

Huh? Who's that looking back at me?

I really want to go outside.

It's funny, but although he spends a lot of time looking outside, if you open the door he makes no effort to go out. I think he's a fraidy cat!

Hmm...there' a whole world out there.

We spent some time yesterday planting some trees. One of the seasonal campers here had a son who got married on the weekend and they were giving away spruce seedlings as party favors. They had some left over, and donated them to the park. But of course they have to be planted fairly soon, so we did some of them yesterday.

Hard to believe there are 67 trees in this basket!

Kevin with one of the seedlings.

I made temporary little orange markers for them, but we'll have to buy some flag markers instead so they don't get run over by the lawnmower.

They'll take forever to become noticeable trees. Spruce grows fairly quickly, but I figure at least five years. But that five years will go by whether the seedlings are there or not, so we might as well watch them grow. No idea if we'll still be here five years from now...can't tell what the future holds!

And, we finished stacking the wood on Sunday. Twenty-two full cords! Here's Ruth and Valine each holding the last pieces. Good exercise!

Oh and I heard back from the supplier that has our motorhome lower door latches. Sure enough, $55 CAD each or $44 each if we buy 10 or more. And you can add on shipping (from Calgary) and taxes. Ouch.

I have tried every option, including calling both the RV manufacturers and exploring the idea of getting them shipped direct from other distributors the U.S., but it works out to about the same amount of money. I think I'm going to take each one of them off today (Sherman has a total of nine of these latches) and test them individually to see how many of them are bad enough to change, and I'll just buy two or three and change the worst for now. I simply can't justify spending over $500 to change the lower door latches.

I know that a lot of you have the Weber grill for taking with you in the RV...but how many have a nice cover for it?

And in Canada only, a fantastic deal on an HP printer...

  1. Dare I say you could call that the Read Forest?? In about ten years it would be impressive...

    1. Seeing that the trees won't be planted all in the same area, it won't seem much like a forest, providing that all the trees survive! :-)

    1. We always seem to keep ourselves busy! Here at the campground especially, there is never a lack of stuff that needs to be done.

  3. The price of those catches is almost as bad as anything that is remotely related to a "boat". Are they made of "unobtainium"? I know some of the parts for our car are quite likely made from unobtainium. Pricey stuff.

    1. "Unobtainium"...too funny.

Surprise, surprise, these latches are also available at boat stores in the U.S...slightly more money going that route!

  4. Not all cats like the taste of mice, usually only the hungry ones lol. Hopefully at that price if you replace the latches they will last permanently.

    1. Oh, I think Coho would be a decent mouser but he just hasn't had the opportunity, although he did alert us to the baby ones in our bedroom. He can hear them every once in a while in the walls but has no way to get at them. The traps are doing their jobs though. :-)

  5. The cat photos and captions are hilarious :-) Looks like a sweet cat, even if he didn't turn out to be too much of a mouser.

    1. He is a sweet kitty but he does drive me nuts every so often but then again, he is still a kitten. I think he might become a good mouser, he just hasn't had the opportunity to see them, as they seem to be hiding in our walls. :-(

  6. What happens to the kitty when you have to leave? The photos are cute.

    1. There is a family in the area that said they will take him. They have a great setup for "outdoor" cats and a young lady who is looking forward to playing with him. Actually they are talking about keeping him as an indoor cat. If/when we return in the spring and he is "fixed" we will take him back again for the summer providing we can tear him away from the young lady. ;-) If not he will most certainly have a good home there.
