Back in the air again!

Sitting here in busy Toronto airport, waiting for our flight to Regina, Saskatchewan. We weren't supposed to be here this early. Our flight from Ottawa was scheduled to leave at 9:00am, but there was another flight at 8:00am, and they asked if anybody would volunteer to leave early. Okay!

Then, we sat on the plane for an extra 45 minutes because they are repairing a runway in Toronto and the arrivals had to be scheduled... or something like that! Can't win. But, we don't care and it's out of our control anyhow. It's all part of travel.

Yesterday, we drove back down to Lindsey's house and spent the afternoon sorting through our stuff figuring out what to take and what to leave behnd in Sherman. It's a bit of a logistical nightmare having our "stuff" in two different places. But, that's our life!

Oh, and our new Speakout Wireless SIM card arrived in the mail yesterday. Cutting it close, because yesterday was our last day. Anyhow, got it all set up and now we have a working phone for use in Canada. More for emergency than anything else, but it should only cost us the $23.50 per month for the five months we're in Saskatchewan.

We bought a big top sirloin roast on sale for only $10.00 CAD ($7.50 USD).  It was on sale, and then marked down a further 50%. What a deal.

We cut it up into steaks, and we BBQ'd them.

While they were sitting on the counter, Lindsey and Justin's 5 1/2 month old Rottweiler puppy Chester managed to get his chops on one of them! I came into the room and he was chewing on something on the floor. I looked at the plate, and it looked like there was one steak missing! And there was.

Oh well... I guess he's a spoiled puppy eating sirloin steak for dinner.

After supper we walked over to the local ice cream stand and Lindsey bought us all an ice cream.

Son in law Justin, with granddaughter Sadie.

Daughter Lindsey with their steak eating dog Chester.

Yum... ice cream!

Grandson Cameron and his bike.

Next post coming to you from Regina, Saskatchewan! The plane is full, with a standby list with 9 names on it... with any luck at all we'll get bumped! :-)

  1. When meat or fish is marked down like that, I'm always worried it may not be very fresh!

    1. Provided it's still within the "best before" date, why would it make any difference? It was tender, and it tasted great!

    2. Never worry about "best before" date with grain-fed beef steak because "aged" beef is so-o-o-o good.

  2. Ha! Here in the states you'd get dragged down the aisle and beaten rather than bumped. Thankfully you live in a more civilized place - even if my own experiences with Air Canada haven't been too stellar.

    1. Air Canada has never been our favorite, but the last few times we've flown with them it's been no problem at all.

    2. OMG, don't get me started. Beach and I will be on a Southwest flight to Havana in June (but for only a little over an hour from Fort Lauderdale thank goodness). I've only heard about one thing Air Canada has done and that is bumping a ten year old child, but not his parents. I probably would have played a joke on Air Canada Customer Service by watching from afar as I sent my ten year old up to the desk with his boarding pass and having coached him to say, "here I am, and by the way, my mother said that when you feed me, no peanuts because I'm allergic."

    3. Air travel is all about patience. We really can't complain about our flights they all have been good, including all the budget ones we have used in Europe. If you read all the fine print then you really shouldn't be surprised.

  3. When we house/ dog sat for a borzoi we either put our thawing meat on top of the fridge or in the microwave. Leeza 's head is higher than the kitchen counter.

    1. Yep, the food needs to be put up higher now in the house, having said that I thought Lindsey had taken Chester with her to the park but I guess she changed her mind and brought him back into the house. He is only 5 1/2 months old so he is going to be growing even taller!

  4. I always buy my meat marked down except when I bulk buy it. I've never had an issue at all, I even freeze it when I get home and rethaw it. Chester likely thought that Grandma and Grandpa bought him a steak treat!

    1. We always try to buy marked down meat as well and have never had an issue with it either.

Chester was one lucky dog, I guess that was our going away present to him! ;-)

  5. Not to poke the hornet's nest but did you throw a 'loonie' (hope that is right) into that Styrofoam tip jar at the ice cream window? They seem to be everywhere now. Sounds like a fun day with family. X

    1. oh and is that a picture of 'poutine' next to Sadie's arm at the ice cream window? always wanted to try it but believe the backside of that deal would be quite extreme

    2. Nope we didn't and neither did our daughter, and she is a server herself.

Yes that was a picture of a specialty poutine that won an award at some festival in Montreal. It looked like a heart attack waiting to happen!

  6. Short rant. It does matter and that's why the airlines are getting away with it. People seem to exclude airlines from customer service ratings. It is in our hands and we need to make sure it gets back under control. Since 911 the airlines have taken the attitude they can do whatever they want. A flight attendant is not a marshall and the airline has certain rights but they are not exempt from the law. I'm not buying it.

    1. I don't think people seem to exclude airlines from customer service, we are constantly hearing about poor service but then we have also seen and heard about great service. We never enjoyed traveling with Air Canada because we had found the service very poor but in the last 5 to 10 years we have seen an improvement with them and we don't mind traveling with them, although sometimes they have seem to have outrageous prices (we don't buy those tickets!). With West Jet we have only heard good things about them. I think part of the problem is that many people don't read the fine print on their tickets and aren't aware of the rules for the flight, mainly about luggage size and weight and come to the airport with overweight and/or oversized luggage and then have to pay extra for it. This happens a lot with the discount airlines, and that is why their price is lower so they can nickle and dime you for everything unless you read the rules beforehand and come prepared. We do agree that airlines should not be overbooking flights though!

  7. Southwest and United have decided not to overbook their flights due to public outcry. I agree, we pay for our seats/flights and should have customer service like any other industry. I also agree there are a few obnoxious people aboard flights and they deserve to be booted from the flight i.e. racist comments, etc.

    1. We agree, they should not be allowed to overbook flights and I think some of that came from the time when fuel was so expensive that they were trying to make sure the plane was full to help cover the extra cost of fuel and still make a profit. Airlines are doing way better now and this practice should be stopped and as you mentioned some of the airlines are starting to do this. Booting off passengers that are disrupting the flight because of their bad behaviour should be done but it is totally different from being bumped from a flight.
