Back to the Prairies

Up bright and early yesterday morning at 5:00am. Had to be downstairs at the Radisson Hotel Toronto airport for the shuttle bus at 6:00am. Got to the airport and through security and to the gate with lots of time to spare for our 8:00am flight.

It's a good thing airports have finally figured out how important it is for them to supply free wifi to people in the terminal. We've been in 10 different airports so far this year alone, and they have all had fast free wifi.

While we were waiting for the boarding call, they made an announcement looking for volunteers.

No, not volunteers to be bumped!

They said that not everybody's bag will fit in the carry on section, and did anybody want to check them for free. So Ruth and I went and did that.

Even if they had been looking for volunteers to be bumped, we may not have been as enthusiastic as we were yesterday. Simply because we're going to have a hard enough time spending the $1,600 we got yesterday. Really, the only time we can fly in the next year is for our return trip to Ottawa in September, and a flight somewhere in October or November. And because we are frugal airfare shoppers, that $1,600 is going to go a long way!

The plane boarded on time, but we sat for a while and were about a half an hour late taking off. Certainly nice to have the upgrade to "premium economy" seating with an extra couple of inches of legroom. This upgrade normally costs another $40 each.

Taking off in Toronto.

It was an uneventful two hour and forty five minute flight to Regina. Just the way a flight should be!

Arriving at Regina. (pop 225,000)

Back to the prairies!

Our flights the last two days.

Our friend Wendy was there to meet us at Regina airport, and we drove the 45 minutes to their apartment in Moose Jaw here Phil was waiting for us. Wendy and Phil are blog reading friends who are also Rv'ers. We've met them several times over the years and they are nice folks who always look after us when we are in this area!

Wendy is even lending us their car to drive from Moose Jaw to the park. They have a minivan as well, and they don't use the car all summer since it is their towed vehicle when they use their motorhome. She says they'll pick it up at the park sometime, and if they don't we can use it to come back to Moose Jaw when we return in September! Now that's better than taking Greyhound any day!

Had a nice roast beef dinner with them, and then we all watched a local hockey game on tv in the evening.

Today, we arrive back at the park! I wonder how many baby owls we will have this year!

    1. No Wendy, thank you for everything! And, you know our door is always open for you and Phil as well. Hope to see you both sometime over the summer and if not then we will see you again in the fall.

  2. Regina is quite a bit further north of Ottawa. Maybe that is why it is much colder!

    1. Yes, it is further north but it isn't that much colder than Ottawa. Some of the bushes are already budding and the trees aren't far behind.

  3. Nice relaxing flight is always good! Is here an expiry date on the $1600 credit through the airline? You could always use at a later date if there isn't

    1. Yes, there is an expiry date on the vouchers, and it is one year from the date of issue but that doesn't mean that our flight has to be taken within the year just that you have to use it to buy the tickets within the year.

  4. Home sweet home. I think you can transfer the $1,600 voucher to others. I transferred mine to my daughter once. I also transfer frequent flyer miles too i.e. buy a ticket for my granddaughter. I also earn points at some hotels I stay but I try to stay away from hotels to B&B or camp. I've tent camped up and down the east and west coastal drives...awesome. I've never been to other parts of Canada...just British Columbia. If it's anything like the Montana, I'd love it. I loved the rolling, grassy hills of mid-western Montana.

    1. Yes, it seems like there is a way to transfer the vouchers but they don't make it easy!

The part of Saskatchewan that we live in, is very much like the mid-western part of Montana with the rolling, grassy hills but we also have lots of farm fields. Agriculture is big in Saskatchewan.

    1. We weren't quite home yet when Kevin wrote this blog post but we are back home today.

Our campground isn't near Moose Jaw, it is another 2 1/2 hours or so slightly north and west away from there. It is on Lake Diefenbaker near a small town called Cabri. The park is called Cabri Regional Park and the GPS co-ordinates are 50.668775, -108.265787.

  6. The main reason given by expert that causes all of the trouble on airlines today is space. Leg and seat width reduction are the major causes of all incidences on major airlines. Just how many people will fit in a tube at 37,000 feet? Unless of course you want to pay $21,000 U.S. to fly overnight in your own apartment on a major commercial carrier.

    1. Yep, we or should I say Kevin has a problem with the leg room but not enough to spend the extra money to upgrade for more room. We will put up with almost anything if we are getting a super good deal on our flight. Out of all our flights this past winter, I only remember Kevin mentioning once about the lack of space for his legs and I think that was on our cheap flight from Tangier to Barcelona and really didn't mind because it was a relatively short flight.

Somehow, I don't see us flying in our own overnight "apartment" anytime soon with prices like that. We couldn't even afford the "seat bed" upgrade on our flights to Africa or South Korea a few years ago! ;-)

  7. Speaking of baby owls, did the electric company ever insulate that transformer?

    1. No it doesn't look like they have so that will be one of our phone calls to make this week. We were really hoping that they would have gotten around to it last fall. :-(
