Body Bark

A company we had never heard of sent us a couple of t-shirts last Christmas. They simply asked us to try them out, and write about them if we liked them.

We're always willing to offer our opinion, especially on a product that can be related to our travels. And most of you know that we travel very light. So when we did some research about this lightweight, comfortable, easy to wash and dry clothing, we took them up on the idea!

Body Bark clothing is made with a very different type of material. It's soooo soft and it feels great against your skin. The material is called MicroModal, and it's actually made from the fiber of the beech tree. Technically, it's 96% Siro MicroModal / 4% Lycra.

It's easy to describe... it feels like a softer version of silk!

Body Bark t-shirts!

Very important to us is that the product is easy to hand wash and that it dries overnight. We did find that if we rolled them up in a dry towel after hand washing and wringing out that they were wearable by the time we woke up in the morning.

So while we were traveling between December and April, these t-shirts were washed many times, both by hand and in a machine. Very impressed. They didn't lose their shape at all, and they didn't fade at all either. They still feel like they are brand new.

Body Bark makes a lot of different clothing for women, but not much for men! There is only a standard t-shirt available for men, and now you can get either a black one or a white one. But, there is a wide selection of women's tops available.

The only drawback is that the material is fairly expensive to produce, and that is reflected in the price of the clothing. However, we've learned with our Merrell hiking boots and our Tilley underwear that sometimes it's worthwhile to buy expensive clothing. If it's comfortable, and it lasts a long time, then you can justify the price.

They have a good selection of sale items right now.

The clothing is made in the USA, and shipping is included in the price.

  1. I am always on the lookout for clothes that are great for traveling. I've tried bamboo clothing (very soft as well) but had not heard of beech. Will check it out!

    1. Cheapchick, I've tried the bamboo clothing as well and have only two pieces, primarily because of the price. However, the prices of this Body Bark clothing are in line with the bamboo clothing. One would ask why pay the higher prices? My answer would be if you are a person who travels a lot to cold climates, the warmth and insulation of this clothing are marvelous for those climates; the weight is low, and it takes up little space in your luggage. It is noticed that the only thing missing in the Body Bark line for women is a sweater shawl item (which I have in bamboo out of California); the bamboo sweater is a substitute for packing a medium weight coat for chilly weather.

    2. We have heard of bamboo clothing but have never tried them.

Dee, we are like that when we travel, everything has to have more than one purpose. It is important to have light clothing that can be layered when needed or worn alone in nicer weather. It also needs to be easy to wash and dry and something that is very durable because it will get worn a lot and washed a lot so we don't want them losing their shape. So far these tops have held up well.

    1. Yes, we still have to learn to get our heads around some of the pricing on certain items but we have learned that most good quality travel clothing is expensive but it lasts for a long time and holds up well.

  3. This is perfect timing! After another 5 months on the road I've decided to trade in my multi-colour tops for solids and dress them up with scarves. Thanks for the info and review.

    1. Have to agree after a long time of living out of a backpack you start to get tired of the same clothes. I do tend to pick dark solids colours and quite often because they don't show the dirt as much. I like the idea of dressing them up with some scarves.

    1. Nice of your daughter to lend out her travel clothes. And, how lucky that her cousin is headed to Machu Picchu!

We have a store here in Canada called MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op), which is almost the same as REI and we like it too.
