Do you remember Expo 67?

Our daughter Lindsey lent us her car, and we drove up to Ruth's dad's yesterday. On the way, we stopped at a Walmart to pick up a few things. One of those things was a new battery for one of Lindsey's key fobs. These new cars don't have an ignition key. Simply a thing (called a fob) that hangs from your key chain, and so long as it's in the car, the car will start with the push of a button.

But, these fobs won't work when the tiny battery in them goes dead.

They had one in stock at the Walmart. But it was priced at $5.97. I thought that sounded like an awfully lot of money for one tiny battery, so I got on the free Walmart wifi and checked the price at Amazon.ca.

Sure enough, Amazon.ca had a package of five for only $5.20, and that included free shipping. I used the free Walmart wifi to order them online and they'll be shipped right to Lindsey's house.

Later in the day, we went for a walk with Ruth's dad Tony at the nearby Morris Island Conservation area. Their parking lot would be a fantastic boondocking spot for a night or two. (GPS 45.459258, -76.271341). Some nice (but fairly short) trails to take advantage of during the daytime.

At Morris Island.

Things sure are blue!

Nice spring walk.

Tony and his dog Taffy.

Taffy!

Ruth took this photo of me, while I was taking one the other way!

The photo I was taking!

Do you remember Expo 67?

It was a big deal for the city of Montreal, who hosted the World's Fair in 1967. Over 50 million people attended during the six month run. It was the most attended world's fair ever held.

I was only five years old at the time, but I remember it. Sort of.

Well, Ruth's father still has a souvenir. It's a kind of an odd thing to keep around, but it's been sitting on the shelf here at his house since I met Ruth in 1983. In fact, since well before that!

Expo 67 Chocolate drink.

It's a carbonated chocolate flavored soft drink! Unopened bottle. I can find a lot of reference to it on the internet, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is the only one in existence. It is said that it wasn't very good, so I can imagine it's really not very good now!

It was produced by Pure Spring Beverages here in Ottawa under contract to Expo for the six month run of the fair. The company Pure Spring no longer exists.

It's the 50th anniversary of Expo 67 this year. Perhaps some collector would be interested in buying this one of a kind bottle. I wonder what it's worth? I suppose it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it!

  2. Yup, I remember Expo 67, went there with my folks when I was a youngster, too. 50 years ago? Wow, either time flies or I'm getting old... :cD

PS: Nope, didn't try any of that drink.

    1. I think it is a combination of both! ;-)

Nope we didn't try this drink either. I actually think my dad had this bottle given to him by someone else years ago because as kids they rarely ever bought soft drinks/soda drinks.

  3. Looks like a beautiful Conservation. Dad looks great.
Oh my gosh...I don't think I would want to open that bottle and see what it smells like.

    1. The convervation area is beautiful with lots of hiking paths. In the spring, summer and fall he will walk there just about everyday unless it is rainy.

He has no desire to open that bottle. I am sure the drink is no longer drinkable!

    1. It was a lovely day for a walk with him. We have enjoyed our short time together. Hopefully it will be a little longer of a visit in the fall.

  5. My new boyfriend (now my husband of 49 years) and I drove up to that expo - great fun, and of course the drive up from nearby Boston is always a beautiful drive. We love our Canadian neighbors!

    1. Yes, that would have been a lovely drive up from Boston. We really enjoy the scenery in New Hampshire and Vermont. Glad you went to see Expo 67, I am pretty sure lots of people within a relatively close area went to check it out.

I remember expo 67 was there as part of our Honeymoon with my first wife, Wow does not seem like 50 years ago though. Neve did try that drink, can't imagine it would very good though, especially that old bottle but there could be a collector out there somewhere.

    1. It was a beautiful day for a walk. Unfortunately it didn't last though. :-(

We never tried that drink either, we were never pop drink lovers. I am sure that there would be someone out there that would be interested in it, just got to find them.

  9. Love the trail. Taffy looks like our dog Ralphie. Taffy is cute dog. Ruth's dad looks spry out on a walk.

    1. It is a beautiful area in that conservation area with lots of different trails of various levels of fitness.

My dad is doing quite well but I wouldn't say he is spry. He walks slowly but at least he is able to get out there and walk. :-)

  11. I don't care much for the idea of the fob. Last summer in SMA an Argentinian couple on vacation had rented a car. It stalled, the fob battery was dead and they were in deep doo doo.

    1. Chris, I can imagine how the couple felt. Beach and I have a 2013 Lincoln sedan (which we inherited and decided to keep it) and are going through a big learning curve. My biggest fear was what to do if the fob battery went dead in the middle of no where. Therefore, immediately, I visited the Ford dealership for some instruction; if such a situation occurred, I was to open the glove box, just inside is a slot which one side of the fob fits into like a key and activates the ignition. The Ford people, I think, were a little amused that I didn't know this because, after all, it is a four year old car. I guess they didn't know we don't purchase a new sedan vehicle but every 15 to 20 years.

    2. We agree, we would rather just have a proper key to start the car the regular way.

Thanks Dee, for your story because now we have looked online to see how to start her car with a dead fob battery. We are going to give it a try and then pass the info onto our daughter so that she is aware of it, should she ever need to use it without.
