A dramatic evening sky...

Wednesday is our grocery day, so we drove the 45 minutes each way to the town of Swift Current. We always have some running around to do for the park while we're there, and so besides getting groceries, yesterday's goal was to find some specialty stainless steel nuts and bolts to put our swim raft together.

We thought we were going to have to special order them, but the third place we checked had them in stock.

They were supposed to come with the raft itself, but there was some kind of shipping error and we'll have to get reimbursed for them. Stainless steel isn't cheap!

The fields are growing quickly.

And they sure are green.

Seems we're getting just the right mix of sunshine and rain, so I'm sure the farmers are happy so far. Hopefully things continue to go well in that department.

Our grocery bill is still high for the month of June, and we've still got next Wednesday to add in to the monthly expenses. But the freezer is well stocked, and we're still expecting (hoping?) that lower grocery bills in the next three months will even things out.

Local strawberries are ready and so we phoned the nearby Hutterite colony and asked if we could pick some up at the same time we stop for eggs. We pay only $1.70 per dozen for eggs, so it's a worthwhile stop. The strawberries looked delicious and cost $5.00 for a large clamshell.

And, they're normal strawberries. By that, I mean they are like the ones we used to get as kids. Remember them? Not like the big steroid induced ones that are on the grocery store shelves nowadays.

Yummy!

And they're a normal size.

We had a few last night. Are they ever good!

Quite the dramatic sunset we had at the park last night...

    1. We thought it was too, the cloud formation also adds to it.

  2. Love you sky photos.
And yes nothing like fresh local strawberries, just like the good old days, not cheap but so worth it to have good berries.

    1. Thanks George, the sky sure was amazing to look at that evening, it just kept changing. Kevin thinks he missed the best part of it though.

The strawberries weren't too expensive when you consider that there was probably more than 2lbs of them in that clam shell container. They sure are delicious, way better than those huge unnatural looking strawberries in the grocery stores in town.

  4. You are not kidding that stainless steel hardware is not cheap. During my Coast Guard boat days I spent lots of taxpayer money on stainless steel. Had to be careful, too much stainless steel made the hardware brittle, had to get a specific type, #341 IIRC that looked dull, but was strong and corrosion resistant.

    1. Well hopefully that specific type was the kind that Kevin got because they are a bit dull rather than nice and shiny, seeing that the raft will be spending a lot of time in the water.

  5. $1.70 is a good price for eggs in Canada, isn't it? Here in our neck of the woods in Mexico, eggs are $.66 a dozen but I know they are a leader item to get people into the stores. Works for us. The strawberries look great too!

    1. Yes, it is a great price for Canada because in the stores the cheapest eggs sell for about $2.68 or so a dozen and if you are lucky they might be on sale for $2.29. We stop by the Hutterite colony every two weeks on our way home from Swift Current to pick up a couple dozen eggs and now that their fresh produce is starting to be picked we will pick up some of that as well.

We sure miss the strawberries in Mexico, they are the best and the cheapest although we did found the ones in Morocco were cheap and delicious as well. Won't be long now and we will be able to enjoy the Mexican food prices and all the wonderful fresh produce as well. :-) We sure are missing Mexico!

  6. I too wish the powers that be would quit messing with our food and we could enjoy real food again. Organic is expensive but worth it to eat clean! Lovely sky enjoy!

    1. We totally agree with you! We however don't buy organic but do like buying straight from the farms if possible and if the price isn't crazy high.

  7. Doncha love a colorful or dramatic sunrise/sunset? We do. I won't buy supermarket strawberries, they're big, red, and tasteless plastic things compared to the berries we pick ourselves at the farm. No comparison in taste, so it's worth the effort. Now we're picking blueberries -- yum yum! We get our eggs straight from the chickens at the farm, too. Again, no comparison to supermarket eggs. We're just flat-out lucky to have a farm really close by!

    1. Colourful and dramatic skies are the best! :-)

Nope we won't buy the supermarket strawberries anymore, exactly for the reasons you just stated. It's too bad because we love strawberries. The ones we just bought were delicious and really not much more than the ones in the store. The best strawberries we had though were Mexico and Morocco, they were delicious. We can't wait to get back to Mexico just for their strawberries!
