Busy weekend coming up

Well, you may not hear from us much this weekend. The park is sold out, as it is every August long weekend up here in Canada. It's actually been sold out for almost three weeks now, and I'm still fielding about ten phone calls a day from people looking for a campsite.

We had about a half an inch of rain on Tuesday, but it wasn't enough to remove our fire ban which is instituted by the RM (Rural Municipality) that governs the area.

This actually makes our job a little easier because we don't have to deliver any firewood. But, we do feel bad for the campers because a crackling fire is part of the camping experience for a lot of people. We do allow propane fires though, so a lot of people seem to have invested in those.

The water has risen to a level that they expect to sustain for the rest of the season.

I just went out and took these photos just now. There's a few people in the park, but they must all be at their sites still. Nobody around the public areas. That will change this weekend when it will be hard to find a parking spot in some areas of the park!

This area will be full of trucks and boat trailers.

And the waterfront will be full of people.

And then after this weekend, the park will start to quiet down for the rest of the season. A lot of our clientele are local farmers, and harvest is beginning early this year due to the lack of rain. Usually it's mid August, but I drove into Cabri yesterday to pick something up and there's already some guys out taking in the crop.

I just checked the forecast and they're calling for some showers on Saturday, so hopefully that won't put too much of a damper on things!

Igloo Ice Machine is on sale at a great price, however they show as being out of stock. You can still lock in at this price if you don't mind waiting a few days for it to show up...

And in Canada, the Sport-Brella is on sale... today only...

  1. 40 - 70% chance of rain in Ottawa over the next 5 days, then the humidity should drop.

    1. You guys have had way more than your share of rain this summer!

  2. I don't know what a bundle of firewood costs at Cabri, $7.50 here in BC parks. A 20lb. propane tank at $22.50 will keep a bon fire going for about 20 hours. That's pretty good value for the money. But you don't get the crackle and pop... If I had a luxury RV with a tv outside I'd play a recording of the Shaw Christmas fire! ;-)

    1. Firewood here is $10 for a garbage can load which is a fair bit. We love a campfire too but don't like getting the smoke in our faces, which never seems to fail and then having all your clothes smelling of smoke. Got to admit those propane fires have a bit more appeal to us.

  3. I love fire bans as I am asthmatic, and the smoke from smoldering fires (which many people leave overnight, at least in the US) really bothers me. I know most campers love their campfires, but count me one who does not. I do miss S'Mores, though! ;-)

    1. There are quite a few people out there that don't like campfires so you aren't by yourself feeling that way. I can understand it being hard on people with breathing problems.

Not sure I have ever had a S'More before, perhaps once a long time ago.

  4. You should try to take those same three park pictures this weekend, and show them side by side! :)

    1. Yep, although now the weather isn't looking quite so good for today and tomorrow. Fingers crossed that is ends up being a good weekend weatherwise for the campers.

  6. Like your top picture :) I'm going to have go back to your old posts of 2008 and 2011 to write down where you guys camped so we'll know when we head thru Mexico in Dec :). Lyd

    1. Yep, there has been quite a few. If you let us more or less know your possible route we could possibly let you know about some along the way. There are even others after the year 2011 too!

  7. Have fun this weekend, try to get some sleep (yeah right). We are mostly avoiding all celebrations, I much prefer a quieter weekend, maybe some time at the beach with the dog or some kayaking.

    1. Not sure fun is the word to use when we will be so busy keeping the park running smoothly and keeping it all clean but we will try. ;-)

  8. Nice that you have a little respite from all the firewood work. You've got enough to do as it is! :cD

    1. Yes, we do have enough to do without having to deal with the firewood but for the campers sake, it would be nice for them to have their campfires.

  9. Haven't heard you mention going out in your inflatable boat this summer!

    1. That is because we brought it with us in the motorhome last fall because we were pretty sure that we would be flying back to Ottawa from here this fall and didn't want to have to pay to have to bring it on the airplane. We are hoping to get lots of use out of it this winter.

  10. We bought our propane fire pit about 10 years ago and find it works quite nicely, no smoke, no smelly clothes and no sparks. You cab start winding down after this weekend.

    1. We definitely like the idea of the propane fire pits but we don't have any interest in buying one and bringing it along with us, we just don't have the room for it or the need.

Yes, we will be on the downhill stretch after this weekend, it will still be busy but the worst will be over with. :-)
