Retracing our route in Spain

I've been wanting to do this post for a while, so I finally sat down and did some mapping. More for our own records than anything else, but perhaps somebody thinking about RV'ing in southern Spain will also get some benefit from it.

And now that things are starting to slow down at the park, we're going to try to get back into our regular daily postings even though we still won't be actually traveling for another month or so.

We had arrived in Spain in Barcelona, but we took the train south to Alicante where we picked up the motorhome nearby. So the map shows our east to west route from the time we picked it up.

Our route from right (Alicante) to left (the southwest tip of Portugal).

It took us 37 days to do the route above. 1,576 kms (977 miles).

Our return trip from left (Portugal) to right (Torrevieja).

The return trip took us 19 days to do 1,032 kms (640 miles).

To drive that 2,608 kms (1,617 miles) we spent $449 CAD on fuel. Approx $358 USD or €300 Euros.

Highlights of the trip? There are simply too many. As one of our friends said before we arrived there "you don't have to travel very far between attractions in Spain". And it's true. If you look at the routes that we traveled over the two month period, we actually saw very little of Spain. We were only in the southern 1/3 of the country! You could spend a year touring Spain!

The Sevilla Cathedral was amazing.

As was the Caminito del Rey.

And the castles. Lots of castles!

Our next international adventure is only two months away! Barbados won't be quite as interesting but we think it will have it's own charm. And we're looking for a place to get in some relax time as well. But you know us... there will be lots of exploring to do as well!

Dirt cheap...

And in Canada, finally a great deal on camping chairs. The Coleman Oversize Camp Chair with Cooler is on at a great price...

  1. My first ever vacation abroad was to Torrevieja at age 19. It was also my very first flight and I recall it like it was yesterday even though it was, in fact, 23 years ago. The flight was GBP139 (no real discount airfares in those days from LGW) and the accom was GBP50 for a week. Lovely lovely place with delicious peaches. I would love to go back one day.

    1. Glad we could rekindle some memories for you! Sounds like it was a great first trip for you and we really hope that you can make it back there some day. There is so much to explore in Spain. I know that we can't wait to get back there again and see more of what we missed.

  2. I am sure it was a great trip. It is a lot of years since I was in Spain. Maybe an RV trip is the way to correct that:)

    1. Spain definitely deserves a visit. It is an incredible country and that says a lot because we only saw a small part of it. :-)

  4. Since Barbados is a stepping stone island (along with Granada, Trinidad, etc.) to Venezuela, I would be curious to hear from you and Ruth as to whether you notice any impact the chaos in Venezuela might have had on the island. Barbados was such a perfect island compared to the other islands I visited off the northern coast of South America.

    1. If we find out any interesting news of Venezuela having any kind of impact on Barbados we will let you know. I wouldn't expect that there is much or we would most likely have heard something about it on the news.

We are looking forward to our visit to Barbados. We were in Cuba, Dominican Republic and Antiqua before but they are all more north. I would expect that it will be similar to Antiqua and we loved it there.

  5. Spain is also so completely different from one city to another, We visited Malaga, Cordoba and Madrid and you couldn't get 3 more different cities. I look forward to seeing more of it one day hopefully

    1. Yes, it certainly is! I would expect that there was a big difference between Malaga and Cordoba just because Malaga is on the coast and that there are far more resorts/apartments for the tourists coming in to visit during the winter months where Cordoba is more inland and a little more off the beaten path. We were disappointed that we never got to make it to Cordoba, it was one of the places that we had wanted to see but we just ran out of time.

We look forward to seeing more of Spain as well.

    1. We will keep that in mind, thanks Betty. We did see and get to go in the first British prototype Concorde 002 at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in England years ago and that was pretty cool to see.
