Damn rabbits!

Remember last month when I had a problem with chewed wires on the little blue car? Well I've learned since then that it was not mice that caused that problem... it was rabbits!

Who would have thought? But we've got lots of little bunny rabbits here at the park this year. They sure are cute, but they sure are a nuisance.

Anyhow, we've had our friend Wendy's Saturn Ion car here all summer. It's the car that she lent us back at the end of April to come to the park, figuring that she would pick it up at some point over the summer. She has a Class B motorhome that she uses to tow the car, so she was going to come camping for a few days and pick it up then. But she never made it with the motorhome, instead coming to visit with her minivan instead.

We have lots of little bunny rabbits here at the park!

And so her car has sat here all season up by the shop. I've checked it a few times for signs of mice, and haven't seen a thing.

Born Cute

Now that the little blue car is gone, we asked Wendy if we could pay for an 8 day trip permit so that we could use her car for this week and bring it back to her as planned next Monday when we leave here.

Saskatchewan makes it so easy to buy registration and insurance. One stop shopping because we have government run auto insurance in this province. Anyhow, I paid the $49.44 CAD for the 8 day permit when I had been at the agency in Cabri doing the transfer with the guy who bought the little blue car. A little pricey for 8 days, but still very convenient for us.

Anyhow, I went up and started up the Saturn Ion and cleaned all the spider webs and stuff off it. It fired right up with no problem at all, but as I drove it down to the office I noticed the the speedometer wasn't working. Then, the check engine light came on, and then it started flashing "POWER STEERING" whatever that is supposed to mean!

So I went on the internet, and sure enough they say that those three things will happen if there is a problem with the "vehicle speed sensor" attached to the end of the transmission.

Hmph.

So I bring it back up to the shop and put it up in the air and crawl underneath it. And sure enough, there is a wire coming off that sensor that had been chewed right through.

Anyhow, fortunately it was an easy fix and I didn't have to buy any parts!

All back to normal now. :-)

Damn rabbits!

    1. Here it seems we just have to worry about the mice and rabbits. No squirrels or chipmunks here, which seems unusual to us.

    1. We will have to look into that next time we are set up somewhere for any length especially if it is known to have rodent problems.

    1. Seeing that we have an overpopulation of rabbits here and that we constantly saw them under the car it is pretty easy to to come to the conclusion that it was rabbits. Plus the teeth marks on the wiring are too big for a mouse and we don't have squirrels or chipmunks here at the park.

  7. The trick to keeping mice/rabbits/squirrels away from your car is to park it next to a Toyota. They prefer the soy-based wiring. *smile*

  8. We recently had a similar problem and our mechanic in Prescott AZ recommend we buy Lion dung ... we thought he was kidding but he wasn't. It has become come the thing around here and Heritage Zoo in Prescott and Out of Africa in Cottonwood sell the stuff regularly. Supposedly keeps rabbits, pack rats, and mice away. 1. Yep, we have lots of them and they sure are cute but what a nuisance they are! Not just with the wiring but also with the flowers and plants in the garden.

  11. We had a house rabbit for about eight years. We don't like cages so she was free to roam quite a large area. We had read about them chewing wires so my husband put a false wall behind the computer desk and "hid" all the wires behind it. We had a hardwood floor which she didn't like because she slipped on it, so we had little rugs for her to step across. The area rug had a foam padding placed underneath it, once in a while the rug would slip and expose that pad. Would you believe that she would love to take bites out of the foam ! In the the it had chew marks all round the perimeter! We also found that she chewed drywall! There was an extra piece stored in our basement where she often liked to go down to hide. We were shocked to see how much she'd munched off it! Couldn't have tasted very nice but didn't harm her since she lived a good, long life! JanF

    1. She did live to a nice old age. Funny the things they decide chew at, I am sure she could have found something tastier to eat/chew on than drywall! ;-)
