We made a campground reservation!

We started RV'ing almost ten years ago. We've put 70,000 miles (112,000 kms) on our motorhome during that time. And now, for only the second time ever...we actually made a reservation at a campground!

We meet up with our Mexico caravan group at Lake Casa Blanca State Park in Laredo, Texas before crossing the border into Mexico on January 7th.

Lake Casa Blanca State Park is a fairly large park. However they only have 56 RV campsites (30 amp electric, and water). And our group alone is going to take up 10 to 12 of those sites.

So I figured it was prudent that the leaders of the group should make sure they have a site!

Not bad, at $18 USD ($22 CAD) per night. We've booked in to arrive January 5th at 2:00pm. It's a Friday, so we're going to tell the rest of the group to plan to arrive that day as well. It'll give us all day Saturday to go over things with everybody and see if there are any last minute supplies that anybody requires.

The only problem with Texas State Parks is that they have this annoying day use fee. It's $4 per person extra, even if you're paying for camping. So that makes it $26 USD ($31.50 CAD) per night.

We're thinking we might buy the Texas State Parks annual pass for $70 USD ($85 CAD). We'd be able to use it for our time in Texas prior to arriving, as well as when we re-enter Texas in April. The pass allows unlimited entry into all of the parks, so if we want to stop and just go for a hike in one, we wouldn't hesitate to do that. Also, you get four 1/2 price coupons for camping and you can use one of them anytime you stay two consecutive nights.

Oh, speaking of our Mexico RV caravan, we got to meet some of the participants!

One of the couples who has signed up to spend three months with us exploring Mexico is from this area, although they now live in Medicine Hat, Alberta. They were visiting family fairly close by and made a detour to stop by the park to meet us and say hello!

Randy and Elaine have a PleasureWay Class B style RV...which we think is the perfect Mexico RV.

We had lots of fun for a couple of hours talking about the trip and what to expect. Nice to meet them in advance and we sure are excited about meeting the rest of the crew in four more months.

  2. Mexico is such a great country to spend the winter in an RV. We had a truck camper over a decade ago, in which we spent a year in Mexico and Central America with our two big dogs! s\Such a variety this country offers! Enjoy the friendships.

    1. Yep, we love Mexico this will be our 8th or 9th winter down there out of 11 winters. We have now traveled just about everywhere there although there are still some areas that we have missed and need to get to some time in the future. One day we are hoping to buy a smaller unit and then do a huge trip all the way down to Argentina.

We will have to look back in your blog and read about those adventures of yours.

    2. Hi Ruth! When we did our North and Central American camper adventures, which was from 2003 - 2006, I did not have a blog yet. I don't think they even existed back then. I started my first blog when we went sailing in 2007, an adventure that ended up lasting eight years (www.itsirie.com)

We bought our Westy with a trip to and in South America in mind, probably in a year or two. Maybe you can join us? :-)

  3. We ending up getting the Texas State Parks pass to avoid the daily fees. If you can route yourself along these state parks, you will enjoy them. Balmorhea State Park, South Llano State Park, McKinney Falls State Park and Monahan Sandhills State Park.

    1. Thank you for the suggestions Hans. I have saved this and when we get closer we will have a look at them. We may not overnight in them but we will certainly check out the hikes there.

  4. We always buy the Texas State Parks pass and if you are able to use the four 1/2 price coupons it really does pay for itself fairly quick

    1. We just need to make sure that we take advantage of the parks and the coupons to make sure that we get our monies worth. I doubt we will have a problem doing that. :-)

  6. I have to say as a boondocker, I am a fan of Texas and New Mexico State Parks and yes, their annual pass is well worth it if you´re going to be there for any length of time.

That said, I hope you´re not meeting up on a weekend at the Laredo park. It´s a nightmare on weekends. Good place to fish and you actually can catch dinner there.

    1. We are pretty sure that we will be able to make full use of this pass. Now we won't feel bad about passing up some of the parks like we have in the past where would would like to have gone in for a hike but begrudged paying the day fee for it.

Yes, we will be at Casa Blanca State Park over the weekend. Actually I am pretty sure we have before and didn't have any problems.

  7. I am curious do some people that travel with you pull fifth wheels or is it only for motorhome owners?

    1. Yes, some people do have fifth wheels and pull behind trailers. However on this particular caravan they have a length limit on fifth wheels, travel trailers and motorhomes because there are some really tight places that we will be staying at the further south we go.
