Grocery shopping tip of the day

Rainy day yesterday, so we just stayed in and got caught up on a few computer things. We're doing a travelogue presentation on October 13th at the seniors residence where my mom lives, so I spent some time putting some of that together on the computer.

We're going to talk about our trip to Moldova and Transnistria last December.

And, I finally heard back from a bank in Barbados. I had read somewhere online that there was a certain bank there that does not charge any ATM fees to foreign debit card users, so of course if we are given the opportunity to save a couple of bucks, we want to do so!

It turns out that the Blue Machine ATMs operated by Republic Bank do not charge any fees...

"With respect to your query, the charges that you would receive for using our ATM would not be charged by us, this would only come from your bank."

Nice. And since we have a plan that rebates all ATM fees because we keep a certain minimum balance, there won't be any fees at all.

What else. Oh, here's a good grocery shopping tip...

I've been meaning to bring this up for months, but only came across a great example of it the other day. We often buy boneless skinless chicken breast at Walmart. They sell it in $10 packages. But the interesting thing is, there are different amounts of chicken in each package, yet the packages are all priced at $10. We've seen Walmart sell beef and pork chops this way too.

Often, the amount of product is far different. Most people (probably more than 90%) simply grab one of the $10 packages and throw it in their cart.

It's all priced at $10 per package, so they must all be equal, right?

NOPE! Far from it....

This one contains 1.15 kg (2.53 lbs) of chicken.

This one is exactly the same price, yet it only contains .678 kg (1.5 lbs) of chicken.

Almost a full pound of product difference!

Most of them average out to be approximately 1 kg. But if you spend 60 seconds to sort through the available packages to find the one with the most chicken, you come out much further ahead of the game!

  2. I do this when the cost is per item always, works really well on cucumbers too

  3. Cheese blocks are sold that way here as well. All are $6.99 but they vary greatly in size. People don't seem to care. Same thing with gas prices in the US. Price can vary by as much a ten to fifteen cents per gallon but people won't bother crossing the street to save. Amazing.

    1. We cross the street to save .01 a gallon. On 50 gallons I save a little. Becki

    2. Totally agree with you, that some people just don't seem to care. Kevin has said so many times that he doesn't understand why you would fill up with gas at a higher priced station compared to the one down the road that is less.
This is one reason why he always uses gasbuddy.com

John, we would do the same as well!

  4. Wow, I have never seen prepackaged, all the same price meat like that in the Wal*Mart's here. It's a good thing to be on the lookout for and those ATM fees can add up quick, so great work on that, too :)

    1. Maybe they do things differently in the States compared to Canada.

We are always cognizant of ATM fees and like to try and save every penny that we can because if you watch your pennies the dollars look after themselves! :-)

  5. It is a good tip and I always compare the packages. some other stores don't mark the weight on them just sell for the same price, so I actually try to weigh them.

    1. That's a good idea for the packages that don't supply the weights, we will have to remember that tip.

  6. I also found this with potatoes, and it was one of the employees that showed it to me. I found a 5lb bag with 9lbs in it. almost twice the weight.

    1. Wow, that is a huge difference, we will have to pay attention to that as well.
