In to Kentucky, and some cheap gas!!

It's funny, but we've been to Lexington, Kentucky several times... yet we've never been to downtown Lexington. We're staying on the southern outskirts of the city this time so maybe we'll take a day and head into the central area to see what there is to see.

We woke up yesterday morning by the river in St. Albans, West Virginia. I peaked my head out the window to see if the sun was coming up yet...

And I had to grab the camera!

So with that great start to the day, we had some breakfast and packed up to hit the road.

Oh, I never mentioned... this little "Rosie the Riveter Park" that we stayed at in St. Albans... you know, the one with free overnight RV spots and free electrical... It also has a free dump station and fresh water fill! So, we took advantage of dumping the tanks for the first time on this trip, and topped up the fresh water tank.

We could have taken the I-64 all the way to Lexington, but it's so much more interesting on old route 60. So we kind of got on and off the Interstate a few times along the way just to make the scenery a little more enjoyable.

Welcome to Kentucky.

A barn quilt.

Scenery along the way.

A big Kentucky ranch.

Lexington has some of the cheapest gas in Kentucky. So I looked up the best price along our route using gasbuddy.com and filled it to the brim!

This will make our November gas expenses higher than expected, but we'll start of December with a full tank. It'll all come out in the wash.

I put in 45 gallons (Sherman's tank holds 60 gallons) at $2.099 per gallon. That's the equivalent of about $0.72 per liter Canadian. Fantastic!

We're going to hang around with our Lexington friends probably until Wednesday. Then we'll take our time and do some free camping south of here in Daniel Boone National Forest before meandering our way over to Nashville and the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Yesterday's drive, 169 miles (270 kms)

The popular LUCID memory foam mattress toppers are on sale... sleep well!

And in Canada...great deal on a basic sewing machine...

    1. Yes, they are or at least they were! We did the trail back in the spring of 2009 I believe and we loved it. One of the many reasons that we are going to do it again.

    1. Yes, that is still a great deal compared to Canada.

We know that the Trace campgrounds can get busy, we did the trail back in the spring of 2009. We are hoping that because it is later in the fall season that it might be a little less busy, I guess we will see.

    1. We noticed in Ottawa as well how much the price of gas has gone up even since the end of September.

  7. Love the Sunrise Shots. They look like the sky is on fire.
Even at hire fuel prices here in the US it is still cheaper then Canada on a good day.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    1. It did look like it was on fire. We love those kinds of sunrises or sunsets for that matter.

The cheaper gas certainly helps to make up for the difference in the exchange rate on other items down here. We definitely keep tight reins on our spending when we travel through the States with such high exchange rates though.

  8. Just love the barn quilt! You guys are seasoned travelers, but it can't hurt mentioning this, and the citizens of Kentucky are very aware of what is going on. Within the peaceful and beautiful rural countryside of Kentucky lurks a large opioids epidemic, so large that the prior Obama administration started throwing a lot of money into Kentucky with the hope of eradication with easy medical assistance and clinics. Plainly stated, the stuff is just hard to get off of. I think you know where I'm going here, watch your valuables. Kentucky is not the only state with such a large epidemic up there.

    1. Yep, we were followed on a rural back road because we had out of state license plates. The guy/s followed us even tho we stopped to let them pass. Thank heavens we pulled onto the interstate highway to get away. I remember the movie Easy Rider and gives me the willies.

    2. The barn quilts have been nice to see. This is the first year that we have really noticed them. It seems to becoming quite the trend nowadays.

Yes, we are seasoned travelers and we are always aware of our surroundings no matter where we are!

  9. Looks lovely!

We haven't had our trailer for long but on our short stint this past season, on TWO separate occasions in completely different areas, we witnessed people at the dump station using the fresh water hose for rinsing their sewer hoses. and I mean they had the drinking water hose right INSIDE their sewer hose. Have you every witnessed this?? We made the solemn vow to never use those fresh water drinking hoses again. But then, our trailer is so much smaller than most peoples that we are able to use our 5 gallon drinking water jug and fill by hand from somewhere else. Just wonderin'??

    1. Doesn't surprise us. But we don't drink the water in our fresh water holding tank, so we've never been concerned about it.

    2. Very true. We always keep that big 5 gallon jug for our drinking, plus two more emergency gallons under the dinette. Still, pretty stupid. Who knows how many have gotten sick from dimwits like that!!

  10. Is the old adage accurate ... "Red sky in the morning ..."? I do a Happy Dance when gas in SoCal drops below $3/gal.

    1. Nope, at least not on that day. The day was beautiful! :-)

California certainly has some of the highest priced gasoline in the USA, but it also has some beautiful places to visit so sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay the price.

  11. With gas prices so low, now´s the time to be traveling in the U.S.

    1. Yes, it is but with the exchange rate between Canadian and US dollar it still makes other items expensive for us. We have to be careful with what we spend our money on and make sure that it is worth it.

Kentucky is a gorgeous state. I remember years ago, Kevin and I saying that we could easily spend a month or two exploring Kentucky, if not more. :-)
