Out for lunch

Just a coasting day yesterday. Nothing wrong with having a coasting day in Barbados!

We've been staying the last two weeks with a couchsurfing host. He's a single guy, about our age who is originally from the UK, but has been living here in Barbados for about 11 years.

It's not really "normal" to spend 19 days with just one host when you're couchsurfing.

Normally, when we're using couchsurfing, you don't want to overstay your welcome. We have been couchsurfing guests over 50 times around the world, and a normal stay would be between 2 to 4 nights.

But this time, when we put in the request, Eric said "why don't you just spend the whole 19 days?"

We're almost at the end of our stay, so to show our appreciation for his generosity, we took Eric out for lunch yesterday. He suggested the popular restaurant this side of Bridgetown called Brown Sugar. It's probably the only sit down full service higher end restaurant serving typical Bajan cuisine. One of the reasons we chose it was because on Fridays they do a buffet where every item is gluten free! Here are the buffet items...

Lentil Pea Soup
Chinese Cabbage and Carrot Medley
Roasted Butternut Squash
Okra Slush
Black Eye Peas and Rice
Cornmeal Cou-Cou
Macaroni Cheese Pie
Bajan Fishcakes
Steamed Sweet Potato Pudding
Caribbean Pepperpot
Bajan Herb Baked Chicken
Steamed Flying Fish
Fried Flying Fish
Roast Beef
Tossed Island Salad
Cole Slaw
Pickled Green Banana and Breadfruit
Pickled Pork (Souse Black Eye Pea Salad)

Everything was delicious, except we found that the roast beef was overcooked and dry. The flying fish was delicious, and we enjoyed the specialty Bajan dishes.

And here is the desert table!

Ruth had one of everything!

Kind of fun for us because we normally have to ask what products contain gluten, so to be able to pick and choose whatever we liked was great! Overall, it was a very good meal and we didn't need any supper!

Kevin, Ruth, and Eric.

And the Gieco Gecko who watched us eat from his spot on the wall.

Like any sit down restaurant in Barbados, Brown Sugar is not cheap. The Friday gluten free buffet cost $207 BBD ($103.50 USD, $136 CAD) for the three of us including tax and tip. We did not have anything to drink besides water.

But it was a good meal, and we enjoyed it. Thanks for having us stay Eric!

Later in the day, we went for a relaxing swim in the pool...

Ruth has her own pool boy!

Nice grounds here at the condo.

Everything is well maintained.

Nice greenery.

We had been planning on trying (for the third time!) to go to the horse races today. But it doesn't look promising. Either way, we still haven't been to the north end of the island, so maybe we'll do that today or tomorrow. Only two more sleeps and we'll be back in chilly Canada!

Good deal on this Belgian waffle maker...

    1. They really know how to make the buffet dessert table look good and it was good!

The grounds at Eric's place are really well kept and the swimming pool was almost always clean with a nice place to relax in the afternoon after a hot day of being out and about.

  3. Your meal choices are not only substantial, but the photos look absolutely delicious. Considering it was all gluten free the price doesn't seem all that bad for three people.

    1. It was a wonderful place to go and have a good meal of typical Bajan food. Considering we are in Barbados the prices are mid-range, so yes not a bad price. Lunch is much cheaper than dinner and at dinner it is a la carte and they may not have a gluten free selection.

  4. Food looks great but very expensive. Cannot believe how fast the time has gone. At least you will only be here a little while before you head south with Sherman. Enjoy the rest of your stay!

    1. Expensive by our terms for sure but by Barbados terms it was about average, remember things here are a lot more expensive than at home.

The time has flown by and there still seems a lot to see and not enough time to see it in. Oh well, I think we have covered most of the island now, except the north end which we will do today.

Yes, just a few days in Ottawa then we hit the road, however we will still have some chilly temperatures for a while yet with our drive south.

  5. Wow, that's quite a score to find someplace where everything is gluten free. Looks delicious, especially the desserts.

    1. It sure is but ONLY for their Friday lunch buffet, other than that is it just normal food, not even sure if they have gluten free options on their evening a la carte menu.

The desserts were lovely, especially considering that that was the first time we had something sweet since we arrived here on Oct. 25th.

    1. It is going to be a HUGE temperature difference going from here to Canada on Monday night! Sherman is going to be like a refrigerator/freezer when we get in him in the wee hours Tuesday morning. Not looking forward to that!!!!
