Mexico RV Caravan Travel Day.... and a request...

On Wednesday morning, we were on the road from Conhaus to Palenque at 9:00am. Very often, we have the Green Angels travelling with us, but not always. It depends on their availability and the route we are on. Anyhow, they were supposed to show up at 9:00am, and they are normally early. This time, we were pulling out and they had not yet arrived. We leave on time, Green Angels, or not.

Just as we were about to pull out onto the highway, there they were!

Right on schedule.

I went over the route with the Green Angels, and off we went.

Very bad road entering Escarcega.

Normally, I have the Green Angels follow behind us.
But in built up areas, I sometimes ask them to go up front.

Big traffic circle statue in Escarcega.

Want to buy a big bag of oranges? 70 pesos ($5.00 CAD, $4.00 USD) per bag.

These worker are clearing the brush at the side of the road.... using only machetes.
There were probably a half dozen guys.

Ranch country.

Near the border of Tabasco.

Entering the state of Tabasco, there was a big grass fire burning.

Mountains up ahead. Back into the type of countryside we love!

We haven't been to Palenque since the end of January 2009. The town of Palenque is really nothing special, but the nearby Mayan ruins are very special. The Mayan city of Palenque was at it's peak during the 7th century.

We are here in Palenque specifically to visit the ruins again with the caravan group, and we are excited to be here. Out of the 10 or 12 Mexico archaeological sites that we have visited, Palenque has been our favorite. More about that in the next blog post!

Driving through the town of Palenque.

The scenery in this area is beautiful!

We arrived at the Hotel Nututun. It's a nice hotel in the area that has historically allowed RVs to use it's parking lot. There are no services other than a dump station, and a water fill tap.

This time, we drove in expecting to be parked up in the parking lot, but we were directed to a really nice green space park beside the river. Much nicer than we were expecting. No photos yet, but I'll get some before we leave.

You can hear the howler monkeys in the distance during the night. It's a very cool spot!

So, not an exciting driving day, but we are happy to be back in the lush rainforest with mountains. Love it!

Next post, our re-visit to the Palenque ruins. Was it as good as we remembered it being?

While we have you reading this, we want to plant a seed regarding an upcoming stop. Our Mexico RV caravan group will be spending a night parked up at the Hogar Infantil Orphanage. Ruth and I have stayed at this orphanage twice in the past. It's a fairly big organization, and we think that it is extremely well run.

Our group will be buying supplies for the orphanage. Yes, they accept donations online through an American run board of directors, but we want to go a step beyond that. There are some things that the orphanage needs... running shoes was one of the items. We will be meeting with the local director when we arrive there to find out any special needs, but our group will be buying goods in the local town to support the children. There is no middle man involved, and everything we spend goes directly to help the children. We are not simply bringing things down from (for example) Walmart in the U.S., so we will also be supporting the local economy by buying things directly from the businesses in the nearby town of Ocozocuatla.

If you want to help these children, you can donate easily to our paypal account at paypal.me/kevinandruth

Any money donated between now and Sunday February 25th will go directly to help the kids. Please take five minutes out of your day and send a couple of bucks to a worthwhile cause.

You can find out more about the orphanage here...

    1. It is included as part of the trip but collecting the money and going out to buy the supplies will be on our own time but to us that is still part of the experience and we are more than happy to help out. :-)

  2. A very warm gesture of compassion indeed. I’m sure the orphanage will be more than grateful for your donations.

    1. The Green Angels are a grea and we are happy to have them tag along with us.

Mexico is a fantastic country, especially if people north of the border can get over the fact that the media really doesn't show the country in it's true light.

The orphanage is a well run organization and we are more than happy to help them out in any way that we can.

  4. Hey guys, tried to send $40 Canadian to your paypal account. it wouldn't allow me to. I then called my bank, and had back and forth emails with paypal (so frustrating) Everything fine with my bank, my paypal linked bank account is fine. Paypal tells me that I cannot send money to Mexico. I told them that I am not sending money to Mexico, I am sending to a Canadian couple who will use there debit card to either obtain cash or make purchases for the orphanage. The replied back again that I cannot send money to Mexico. Just want you to know that I tried. frustrated. any ideas?

    1. Hi Diana. Strange, nobody else seems to have gas a problem. Only thing I can suggest is to go into your PayPal account and send it directly to my PayPal email address at [email protected]
