Mazatlan, and saying goodbye

We walked the the ferry dock here at Isla de la Piedra and took the panga boat to Mazatlan. It crosses the shipping port and is about a ten minute journey.

We were meeting up with Steve and Rebecca, a couple who had hosted us at their place in Duluth, Minnesota back in 2013. They've been loyal readers of this blog since 2011!

On the ferry boat...

Big cruise ship in Mazatlan Port.

Fishing fleet.

We walked about a kilometer from the ferry terminal to downtown and met Steve at noon across from the cathedral. We went for lunch, but Rebecca couldn't join us because she had a painting class. After lunch, we walked over to their place overlooking the bay. They are staying here for six months while she works with a local English church, and then they go back to Minnesota where they have bought a motorhome and are selling their house. Another pair of vagabonds hit the road!

The rooftop of their building has beautiful views!

The beaches are pretty busy with Easter Week visitors.

Zoomed in across the bay.

Zoomed in on the hotel zone.

Steve, Rebecca, Ruth, and Kevin

Too short of a visit, but it seems that's the way this whole three months has gone. Rarely long enough in any one spot for our liking.

Back over to the RV Park in time for a quick happy hour and then we walked over to the restaurant for our final group farewell dinner.

I walked around and took photos of all the couples. I know it doesn't mean a lot to most of you, but some of them have families and friends who read this blog, plus ten years from now we can look back here and remember all their names!

Carle and Sandy from British Columbia.

Louise and Michel from Alberta.

Lovey and Tim from Florida.

James and Karen from Oklahoma.

Angelika and Bernd from British Columbia.

Gail and Kenny from Idaho.

Randy and Elaine from Alberta.

Richard and Melanie from British Columbia.

Mike and Linda from California.

Gail and Jim from Colorado.

Mark and Barbara from Kentucky.

And yours truly!

So we had a good farewell dinner, with lots of hugs and goodbyes, and the group is split up now. Three of them left together early this morning, Another seven are leaving in a half an hour, and then Ruth and I are taking the last two out with us towards Laredo. We've had enough of the beach and the bugs and we are heading to the mountains!

Only three more nights in Mexico!

Great deal for the fisherman!

And in Canada...

    1. It was a very busy time but boy did we ever see and do a lot during our 3 months down here in Mexico. I am sure for many this was a trip of a lifetime and we think that everyone totally enjoyed the trip, even with the few little glitches.

    1. We should have introduced them all to you at the beginning of the trip but things just got so busy that it got totally forgotten about.

Yes and no! Overall we enjoyed our time even though it was rushed at times but we had fun showing people some of the places that we love so dearly in Mexico and also exploring some new places. It was sad to say goodbye to everyone but we are also looking forward to being back on our own again and being able to just take things slowly once again and explore new places.

  8. Aaawww after a bit it's like leaving family members. Nice looking folks with big smiles. I'd love to hear what they had to say about their trip. I'd love to drive across Canada...only been to parts and the parts I've been to I loved. Wow Mazatlán has grown. It's been years since I've been there with hardly any high rise hotels. On our bay boat tour, the vocal artist asked me to request a song....I was dumb founded because I don't know any Spanish songs. Then Vaya Con Dios popped into my head. We all sang at the top of our lungs...many dreams away.

    1. Yes, it is a bit like saying goodbye to family members. We definitely felt like a family at times. Overall we think everyone enjoyed their trip, all in different ways of course. They will certainly has some great memories to look back on.

Driving across Canada is a beautiful adventure, I hope you can do it some day. Like the States and Mexico, every province is just a little different from the others but all with some fantastic scenery.

  9. I have followed your blog for a year or so and never posted. The travel throughout Mexico this time was full of unexpected adventure and want to thank you for your generous sharing. I have learned so much and enjoyed the photos. We now have a Sprinter Camper Van and will travel from Alberta to Ontario this summer. Our longer stints of camping will be around the shores of Lake Superior. I am dreaming that one day we will do a tour like this.

Mexico is full of adventure and beauty, it is just a shame that some people don't come down and visit because of the negative news and stories that they hear and believe. I hope that we were able to show others that Mexico is an amazing place to visit, it certainly isn't perfect but then again we haven't been to a country yet that is.

Sounds like you will have a fantastic trip ahead of you this summer. Lake Superior is beautiful and there lots of places to explore if you just take the time to find them. We hope that one day you will venture down to Mexico as well. :-)

    1. Other than 9 days of rain the rest of the 3 months was beautiful and sunny so there is a reason for those tans! ;-)

Thank you so much for you invitation Jana, we would love to take you up on it some day but it won't be this spring as we are headed north from Laredo, Texas.

Maine is beautiful! We loved Acadia National Park when we were there in July 2011 but it was very busy! We hope you have a great time on your adventure. Happy Travels to you both. :-)

  14. Thank you for the day to day entries while you've been in Mexico. I've been following you for some time. I never knew Mexico was such a beautiful place. Being American, I've mostly heard bad things. From your blog, I can see many good reasons to go! Thank you for that!

    1. Thank you for taking the time to comment Mistress Snowbound, we are so happy to hear that you have enjoyed the daily entries and that we were able to show you a Mexico that most people don't even realize exists. It is unfortunate that so many negative things are said about Mexico, especially by those that have never even visited. It is our hope that we can show people the real side to Mexico that is full of beautiful scenery, fantastic people and culture, lots of history and delicious food. We hope that one day you will make a trip down here and see it for yourself. :-)
