There's always something interesting to see in Mexico

Ruth made some chocolate chip cookies in the morning, while I did some work on the computer, and some more cleaning on Sherman.

Then we decided to walk into Cholula to the big market and find some lunch. Lots of people out enjoying a beautiful Sunday, and of course the Cholula Pyramid is free to the locals on a Sunday, so that brings in the crowds to the main attraction in the area.

The great Cholula Pyramid looks more like a hill. And it's entirely possible that when the Spanish built their church on the top of it way back in 1575, they didn't even realize it was a pyramid.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios sits on top of the huge Cholula Pyramid.

Lots of arches.

Lots of people out enjoying the day.

We found a food stand in the market selling carnitas. We split an order that came with a drink included for 60 pesos ($4.25 CAD, $3.25 USD). Not a bad lunch for the two of us!

We wanted to buy some veggies, but didn't want to carry them around with us all day so we decided to go out and do some exploring and then come back for the veggies later.

It is said that there are 365 churches in Cholula... one for every day of the year!

Many were damaged in the September 7th earthquake last year.

Big doors.

 Colorful street.

Part of the base of the great pyramid has been rebuilt.

The great Cholula Pyramid is the largest in the world by volume. It is not the tallest though, but it certainly does have a beautiful view of the surrounding area once you get up to where the Spanish church stands.

Archaeologists have dug 8 kms (5 miles) of tunnels in the pyramid during their explorations, some of which are open to the public.

Climbing up to the church.

Almost there!

Lots of people at the top.

Some great views!

Looking towards downtown Puebla.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.

The archaeological site.

San Andres Cholula.

We then walked back to the market to get our veggies.

Saw this character along the way.

Buying our veggies.

All of this, for 44 pesos ($3.10 CAD, $2.50 USD).
We love Mexico!

There's always something interesting to see.

This guy would drag his ladder out into the intersection during a red light, climb on top of it, do his juggling act, and climb back down before the light would turn green, and then he would collect some pesos from the people who had been stopped at the light.

Back at the RV, we figured out we had done almost 10 kms (6 miles).

Ruth made pizza for supper!

Delicious!

Not sure what's on the agenda for today, but I am going to go out and talk to a few local mechanics and see if one of them is interested in coming here to the park to do some work on Sherman when the parts arrive.

    1. Cholula is a real pretty little place. The downtown section isn't huge but it feels like small town Mexico with a great market and a wonderful central plaza/park that gets well used. There is also a very new train that takes you from downtown Cholula to downtown Puebla. We haven't used it yet but we will.

The pizza was delicious, we even have some leftovers for lunch. :-)

  2. Thanks for the information and tour. That is a big city, especially for walking. Ruth can really cook. It's a wonder you're not fat.

    1. It is really two cities blended together. It is easy enough to walk around the downtown areas of both Puebla and Cholula but not really practical to walk between the two cities. They do have a new commuter train that goes between the two cities though and hopefully we will give it a try in the next day or two.

Kevin's grandfather always said "You can't fatten a thoroughbred!" and Kevin stands by that saying. ;-)

  3. I can't imagine the scene back in the day of the pyramids. Was the population that huge to built those humongous pyramids? Where did the people come from? Very interesting area. Love the fresh veggies and pizza.

    1. Yes, it probably was that huge at one time but like most pyramids in Mexico, the original one starts out smaller and then each new "ruler" builds one that is bigger over the existing pyramid. So normally there are at least two smaller pyramids underneath the that you can see with your naked eye. It also takes decades or more to build them.

We love the fresh veggies and fruit in Mexico, they are always the best, the most tender and sweetest we have ever had, especially when compared to either Canada or the US.

    1. We love shopping a the markets here in Mexico. It is where you always get the best produce at the cheapest price, unlike the markets back home which are ridiculously expensive.

We really enjoyed our day exploring downtown Cholula, it is a pretty place.

    1. That is one the many reasons that we love Mexico so much as well. We love going to the central plaza and just watching all the happy families out and about enjoying the day. It puts a smile on our faces :-)

    1. As far as we know they are fine. We had them changed a while ago but we haven't put all that many miles on them since they were done. Kevin is going to double check them again though. Our motorhome doesn't have the best suspension to start with and some of these roads in Mexico really take their toll on the suspension and ball joints.

  7. Oh I’m SO envious of Ruth! She’s a great cook to have around for sure! Looks like Cholula is another place one could get lost in and not get tired of exploring. Thanks for the beautiful pictures. Hope you get a good mechanic to help with the repairs.

    1. My mother was a great cooks so I guess that rubbed off on me. It helps that I like to cook. :-)

Cholula is a pretty little city and we have enjoyed our time exploring it.

I think we have a mechanic all lined up to do our repair. He will actually come out today and take the old damaged parts off so it will be ready for when the new ones arrive, hopefully by tomorrow.

  8. It looks like the stoplight changing guy is silver -- like the Tinman in the Wizard of Oz! ;-) Ruth's pizza looks lovely. Chorizo on top? Gotta love those Mexican prices. We can't wait to go back.

    1. Yep, he was very silver! I couldn't imagine having that stuff on my body, I'm sure it can't be good for you.

Yes, that was chorizo on top and the pizza was delicious! :-)

  9. Waiting for something to happen can be such a bore (**sigh**) or a rich and steady time. It is what we make of it.

    1. Waiting at the side of a busy highway in the middle of nowhere two weeks ago was a bit of a bore, not so much here. As you said it is what you make of it. :-)
