A nice day in Dawson City, Yukon

In the morning, we walked over to the Dawson City Museum. We were actually a little later getting going than we wanted to be, but when we got there at shortly after 10:00am, we learned that it only opens up at 10:00am... so our timing was just fine.

The museum has been a museum since 1962, however the building has been there since 1901 when it was constructed as the Territorial Administration Building.

We paid the $9 CAD per person entry fee, which was almost worth it just for the movie they were showing. Really enjoyed the 1957 short film "City of Gold", a documentary narrated by Canadian author Pierre Berton who was born in the Yukon and spent the first 12 years of his life here in Dawson City.

Dawson City Museum.

Nice flowers at the side of the museum building.

Ruth, enjoying the flowers.

Inside the museum.

Included in your admission price is the movie and several different tours that run throughout the day. You're even allowed to leave the building and come back later in the day if you wish to do a different tour then.

How to tan a moose hide!

Here, I'll make it easier for you to read!

The upstairs of the building contains the courthouse which is still used occasionally for local court business.

All rise for Judge Kevin!

After lunch, we had more visitors. Blog readers Judy and Tim from Nova Scotia came over and said hello for an hour. They're on a 6 month trip with their truck and travel trailer, although are going to head back to Nova Scotia to sell their house. They want to be full time vagabonders like us!

We'll probably go to Diamond Tooth Gerties tonight with them.

Then, Herlinda came over again with Sophie.

Ruth, visiting with Sophie.

Herlinda and Sophie stayed for dinner and Ruth made one of her typically delicious chicken stir frys. We needed to get some exercise so we walked over to the ferry with her since she had left their van at the campground on the other side of the river.

Ruth, Herlinda, Kevin, and Sophie the dog.

Here comes the ferry.

This tiny house trailer got off the ferry.

Then Ruth and I walked back to Sherman through town.

One of several hotels still operating.

Another rainy morning today, but it's supposed to clear up after lunch.

  1. O.K. That's it. I've got to get up to the Yukon! I was in Beaver River, Yukon once installing metal oilfield buildings. Nowhere near as nice as Dawson City! Great photos as usual.

    1. So glad that we convinced you. It didn't take much arm twisting by the sounds of things! ;-) We are really looking forward to seeing some of the southern part of the Yukon now, but that won't be until the beginning of August as we slowly make our way down into British Columbia.

  2. Your header photo is surreal. That is probably one of your all time best. My opinion of course.

    1. Thanks Chris, I think it is probably now one of our most favourite pictures too! :-)

  3. Your trip up the Dempster brought back so many wonderful memories of the trip my husband Doug & I made 15 years ago. We only went as far as Inuvik because there wasn't a road to Tuk then. The Dempster was one of our favorite parts of our Alaska trip. In fact, we loved it so much that we made a detour back that way in September to see the fall colors which were spectacular! Thanks for sharing! JoAnn Dubrouillet

    1. We are so happy to have brought back some great memories for you! There was certainly some beautiful scenery along the Dempster and it sure would have been nice to have seen it in the fall. We have seen pictures of it in the fall and it looks gorgeous. I mentioned to Kevin that on some other trip up north I would like us to spend some time in the Great Slave Lake/Yellowknife area and I want it to be in September. So glad that you enjoyed the Yukon so much that you went back for more. :-)

    1. Glad that you enjoyed your trip up north. I bet those 20 days just flew by, there is just so much to see and do up here. We have done both, the Sourtoe cocktail and Gerties and we actually went back to Gerties again last night. It is a fun show. We hope that you are able to do the trip again!

    1. We were actually impressed with the museum, it is fairly large for a small town and it covered so many of the topics up here in the north, mainly of the gold rush and the natives and their beautiful handiwork, what life was like back then, and they did tours all throughout the day. They also had a train shed in a separate building but we just ran out of time and didn't get to see it. Definitely worth the price.

  6. We spent 7 seven incredible days in the Yukon. 8 friends canoed from Whitehorse to Carmax. Then drove on to Dawson city. It's like walking back in time. My husband of course had to drink the "sour toe cocktail". A show at Gerties, panning for gold and some wandering around the beautiful town rounded out the visit. Over the top of the world highway and back down to Whitehorse. Most incredible adventure (vacation) ever. We're all talking about going back to Dawson. I personally think it would be really cool to go work in Dawson for the summer. I don't think I could handle the winters. Yukon territory is fantastic. If anyone has to opportunity to go please make the effort. It's just too bad that it cost so much for Canadians to travel our own beautiful country.

    1. So glad that you enjoyed your time up here but I bet you found those seven days just weren't nearly enough time up here! We have now spend almost a month and a half just in the Yukon and there are still things we have missed, there just isn't enough time.

I hope that you are able to make it back to Dawson again someday. We said much the same thing, we could work a summer up here no problem but like you, I don't think we could spend a winter up there. Too cold and dark for us. ;-)

We agree, if someone has the opportunity to visit the Yukon then they should definitely do it. A yeah, it is expensive but if you are careful where you spend your money and how you spend it, it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.

  7. Looks and sounds like Dawson City has “evolved” quite rapidly and nicely since our first visit there in 2013. Hopefully, we can make it there next year or the next...We like to travel the way you do....slow and leisurely as possible. The Top of the World Highway was a highlight for us. Rest well and continue with your safe travels.

    1. We have no idea what it was like in 2013 but we have enjoyed our time here. Between Parks Canada, Dawson City and private individuals they have done a beautiful job in recreating a historic town from back in the 1898 and beyond.

We just finished the Top of the World Highway and although it was nice we really preferred the scenery on the Dempster Highway.

  8. Wow! Just when I thought your header pictures couldn’t get any more amazing, this one steals the show! I think you could make a picture book of all your header photos. They are all so amazing! Love the flowers! Your photos are so crisp and clear. Safe travels!

    1. This last header picture was nice but I still love the one from our Grizzly Lake hike the best!

We have to agree with you, over the years we sure do have some beautiful pictures, just not sure anyone would be interested enough in them for us to publish a coffee table book of them. :-)
