July Expenses

Well, not a bad month considering we spent almost a thousand dollars on fuel! We knew that was going to be our major expense up here in the north, so it's not that much of a shock.

We spent a total of $2,069 CAD ($1,600 USD) for the month.

Here's how it all broke down...

(Note, the following prices are all in Canadian dollars. For U.S. dollar equivalent, subtract about 25%)

Gasoline: We spent $929 on fuel, and we ended the month with pretty much an empty tank. We drove about 2,200 kms (1,364 miles).

Propane: It was expensive in Eagle Plains, at $1.40 per liter, but we filled the tank for a cost of $84.70.

Grocery: We spent a surprisingly low $462 on groceries. Yes, some items were ridiculously expensive, but we also bought whatever was on sale. Still, we thought it would have been higher, so we're pretty happy with the final tally in this category.

Alcohol: Yikes. What we didn't spend in the grocery department, we spent in this department! A total of $283, which is almost (but not quite!) a record high month for us. And the worst part is that we didn't drink that much! This was our contribution to our "free" Canadian health care system.

Miscellaneous: Not bad, at $135. This was mostly internet access, and of course laundry and a few miscellaneous items.

Entertainment: Again, not bad, at $136. We went to a few museums, and did some tours in Dawson City.

Overnight: We only stayed in campgrounds for two nights the whole month. One night in Inuvik, and one night at Kathleen Lake. Total was $39 for the month.

So, not bad at a total of $2,069 CAD ($1,600 USD) with the exception of the fuel and the booze! August should be a little cheaper, but not much...still quite a bit of driving to do to get us down to southern British Columbia this month.

    1. Overall we think we did pretty well for the month considering where we are. It is about what we expected our month to be so there were no surprises.

  2. Very very good news - I thought your gas and food expenses would be higher, gas has suddenly dropped 10 cents a litre to $1.37 here in Comox, sounds like most of your trip you had similar prices to ours. Our alcohol was its highest month ever too but we had company 2x so I am writing it off to that. Perhaps have a few drier weeks in August to make up for it :)

    1. Gas was more or less what Kevin had expected it to be but our food expense was quite a bit less than what he expected and that was all making our own meals except for two lunches out, so we were very pleased about that. Yep, alcohol is a hard one up here in Canada, nowhere is it cheap!

  4. Maybe you needed a little extra alcohol to keep you warm and thawed out! I think it’s an awesome adventure for the money! Wish I had solar like you do - that’s a great way to stay out of campgrounds!

    1. Unfortunately up here in Canada even a little alcohol costs a lot.

Putting solar on the motorhome was one of the best things that we ever did and we have no regrets at all and encourage people to do it, every chance we get. These days it is so much cheaper than when we did it so if you can, you really should look into having it installed.

    1. Thanks Lynnette! We are all about having a good time without it being a huge expense and we like to try and let others know that this lifestyle can done without breaking the bank. :-)
