Ready to hit the road!

We've been parked up at our friends Art and Jean's place in Whitehorse, Yukon for the past 4 nights. They've let us use their water hose to give Sherman a much needed clean up!

Even though we had used a pressure washer when we were up in Tok, Alaska to get rid of some of the Dempster Highway mud off Sherman's underside, there was still a lot of it that I didn't get at the time.

And when that highway wasn't muddy, it was dusty! So all of the lower compartments were full of dust, and even the interior needed a major cleanup because of it. So while I was working outside, Ruth was working inside.

Didn't take a lot of photos of this whole procedure, because it's really not that interesting!

But to give you an idea...

I had to actually lie on my back on the ground to hose off the chunks of mud.

And of course when the mud dried, it was like concrete!

The batteries. Yikes!

There, that's better!

Sherman, all cleaned up and ready to go.

I took everything out of the lower compartments and had to wipe everything down. Ruth did the same in our closets and the storage under the bed. The dust got everywhere!

Anyhow, that's all done. We even took out the window screens and washed them and I took apart the roof vent in the front and cleaned that as well. Whew!

So, we're hitting the road today. We have to go back into town to use the dump station, get some fuel, and pick up a few more things, and then we're heading down to Carcross to hopefully get some hiking in. Then, we start heading south. We'll probably be driving a little bit every day until we get to Prince George, British Columbia.

  1. Yuk! Glad all that mud and dust is out. One year after coming in from rez driving, my a/c went out after washing my car out. Took it shop and they blew the dust out and the a/c started working. They also blew out areas where water could get to. Amazing what you miss even you thought you gave the car a thorough washing. I was getting antsy waiting to get back on the road with you. Safe travels.

    1. Yep, the mud and dust get everywhere. It will still be awhile before we manage to get rid of it all! Sherman is feeling much, much better now though. :-)

  2. You may want to check the forest fires on your route, several around PG http://bcfireinfo.for.gov.bc.ca/hprScripts/WildfireNews/OneFire.asp. That may alter your course slightly. We've had a lot of lightening the last couple of days and lots of out of control fires :(

    1. Trust us, we are keeping a very close eye on them. Kevin has relatives in some of the areas so we are getting constant reports on the fires. Several of his relatives are on evacuation alert! :-(

    1. Yes it was and there is still a little more to do but the worst of it has been done.

  4. Sherman looks great and sure looks ready for the next adventure. We have our eyes on a 30 ft. 1993 Airstream Legacy which has low kilometers and is priced right. We have an RV mechanic giving it any inspection on Tuesday and with any luck may be it’s new owners. We hope if we get it we may be able to do one of your Mexican caravan tours in the near future. We are excited. Stay safe and enjoy the drive.

    1. The difference in price between a 25 yr old unit and a new one will pay for several trips to Mexico. Hope it treats you as well as our '93 Georgie Boy (33 states, 7 provinces, 2 estados, many music festivals). Good luck and safe travels.

    2. Good for you guys, I hope the inspection goes well! Creigh is right about buying an older unit over a new one. You can save a ton of money and be able to put money into doing a few upgrades to the older unit and still be ahead of the game.

  5. Two weeks ago I traveled from whitehorse down the Cassiar hwy... it's spectacular. How are your tires holding up after all those miles on poor roads?

    1. We were going to replace them this fall anyhow... and this has accelerated our plans. The rough dirt roads of the Dempster Highway definitely took their toll.

  6. Excellent job you two on the clean-up! That’s a lot of elbow grease and I’m pretty sure Sherman is very grateful. Enjoy your trip on the Cassiar Highway...looking forward to more scenic pictures. Safe travels.

    1. Thank you Lynnette! Yes, lots of elbow grease went into cleaning him up. He still needs a little more TLC but it is more inside than outside. Sherman feels much, much lighter now and ready to hit the road once again. :-)
