Looking forward to the weekend!

Well, today is the start of my annual cottage weekend with the group of guy friends that I've known since I was 16 years old. We all keep in touch throughout the year via email and facebook, but it's pretty rare that any of us get together otherwise. This annual event has become pretty important for all of us as we get older and realize that we're not going to be around forever.

In fact, one of the fellows isn't going to be there because of a family health problem. Not his, fortunately, but it still reminds us to enjoy life to the fullest as we don't know when our own number is going to come up.

And so we will eat, drink, play pool, and watch some playoff baseball. And I will get out for some exercise. Hopefully some of the others will join me. The weather isn't supposed to be great this year... a little bit of a chilly weekend. But that's okay... there's a hot tub and the pool table and just generally socialize and catch up on what's going on in everybody's lives. Lots of laughs together, and I always enjoy it.

Ruth will spend the weekend with our daughter Lindsey and her family.

Yesterday, we drove in to Arnprior to visit Ruth's dad. But I wanted to get out and see some of the leaves changing color and so while she was visiting, I went for a power walk around town and took my camera with me.

Even with stopping to take some photos, I managed to do 6.4 kms (4 miles) in just under an hour. I'd rather be walking with Ruth, but when I'm on my own I can pick up the pace even more because Ruth really can't keep up with my long legs when I'm going that fast. She would have to be jogging alongside me!

I do want to get a heart rate monitor so I can better judge the intensity of my aerobic exercise. Ultimately, you want to get your heart rate up to about 70% of it's maximum for at least 20 minutes during the exercise period. For me, that would be about 120 beats per minute. It's all about getting the blood flowing.

I've also started a muscular regime for upper body strength... something that I've slacked off on the last couple of years. For a half an hour to 45 minutes, three days a week. There's no excuse not to do it.

Anyhow... happy Friday... enjoy your weekend everyone!

  8. Good on the exercise. It can only do good. I put in an hour and a half between weights and cardio and now that the cool weather is back I'll be doing 10km in the evening of brisk walking. Makes you look good, feel good, and very healthy. Great pics of the colors.

    1. Sounds like you are doing a great job on the exercise as well but then again you were always good at staying on top of it. :-)

    1. Thank you Lynnette! It's the maple trees that give us all the nice reds and oranges.

    1. So glad that you enjoyed the colourful fall pictures. Ontario is definitely a great place for seeing the fall colours. You will have to make a trip up there someday.
