Out for a walk on the tracks

So we're visiting with our daughter and her family the other day, and grandson Cameron (age 7) has been taught by his dad how to play chess.  He wants to play against me. Now, I remember how to play chess, but it's probably been 40 years since I've played!

But how tough can it be...? He's 7 years old!

Well I tell you, it made my brain hurt.

He didn't win, but neither did I. The game ended in a stalemate.

But the worst part was that he didn't even seem to have to think about it. And half the time, he was busy with whatever his sister was doing and not even worrying about the game while I pondered my next move.

I blame it on the fact that I haven't played in 40 years. Hmph. We will have to have a rematch this weekend.

Not the nicest fall weather here in Ottawa so far. Overcast, sprinkling with showers, and a high of about 14C (58F).

But, we still have to get some exercise. There is a route that we often walk here in Galetta called the rabbit path. Nobody knows why it's called that... it just is. Anyhow, we set off for a walk around the rabbit path but came to some bridge construction and the road is closed. We tried to walk through, but one of the workers said we weren't allowed.

So we found a different route.

Over the railway trestle!

This rail line isn't abandoned... but there is only one train per week and we think it runs on a Sunday. So we figured we were pretty safe walking down the tracks.

Doing some work on the road bridge.

And more work here.

Gotta practice our balance!

At least we're not on the wrong side of the tracks!

Looks like the corn is just about ready to harvest.

We did 5.6 kms (3.5 miles) in exactly one hour. Not bad.

Busy day today... meeting my mom and my older sister for lunch, and then over to visit daughter Lindsey and family again, and then I'm going out with an old friend of mine for a couple of beers tonight.

  1. Made your brain hurt - laughed out loud! 😂 I’ve been pretty humbled this year with what I can/can’t do anymore. But what are ya gonna do?? Enjoy!

  2. I use to play chest too but haven't played in years. Yesterday my son was playing Go...a game that seemed like Chest but maybe not. He won the game he says cuz the other guy gave up. I bought a game called Tokaido last year but haven't opened it yet...have to look for the game and read to see how to play. Anyway, love that you two exercise most every day.

    1. We haven't heard of either of these games, we will have to ask our son if he has heard of them. He loves games where he has to use his head.

    1. Maybe now is a good time to get back a playing. We have to use our brain now more than ever, as we get older.

  4. I’m sure I’ve totally forgotten the basics of how to play chess. My Dad taught us older kids how to play. Haven’t played it since my teen years. Perhaps Kevin could do a lesson 101 during the Mexico trip. THAT would be fun!
Happy Thanksgiving! It’s a beautiful 4C here in Edmonton.

    1. Lol, maybe we will have to have a game night or two on the trip. First we would need a chess board. :-)

Happy Thanksgiving to you both as well.

  5. Kids pick up on things so easy, brain games are much more difficult for anyone over 40. Obviously he is a super smart kid!
