Ruth goes sand sledding!

We hit the road at a decent hour yesterday, not sure of how far we would make it. With a full fresh water tank, and empty waste holding tanks we said a silent thank you to the town of Jal for the totally free RV sites at Jal City Park and we headed out, making our way southeast into Texas.

It was only a few miles and we crossed the border from New Mexico into Texas...

Welcome to Texas!

We drove for an hour or so and then made a stop at Monahans Sandhills State Park. We still have our Texas State Parks annual pass that we bought last December when we were in Texas. We got a lot of use out of it then, and it's still valid until the end of this month so we figure we might as well use it when we can.

As you can tell from the name, there are a lot of big sand dunes at this park. And it's well known in the area for going sand sledding. We went and got our entry pass, and Ruth said she wanted to rent a saucer. I saw the disclaimer that said "no guarantee the sled will slide" and I figured it wouldn't be worth it. Ruth asked to rent one, and the lady said "oh, just go ahead and take one". They were only around $2.50 for under two hours. We weren't about to argue with her, and off we went.

The battery in the camera went goofy and I don't have any photos. But the camera worked when it counted... here's the video!

Ha... too funny!

We didn't stay long though. It was really windy in that area, and you can only look at so much sand.

We carried on south to Fort Stockton where we did some grocery shopping and had a lunch break.

Not that much to look at, but the road was good and very little traffic.

It got a little more scenic as we approached Sanderson.

Nice sky!

Temperature about 72F (22C) and cloudy with sunny breaks. Very pleasant!

We made it to the Judge Roy Bean Visitors Center in Langtry, Texas. But we got here just after it closed at 5:00pm. We've heard of Judge Bean, but don't know very much about him so we will go for a visit before we head out this morning.

Not very level parking at the Visitors Center, so we found a spot by the Post Office. They're closed on a Sunday so we figured it would be no problem, and it wasn't. Langtry is a pretty small town!

Yesterday's drive, 230 miles (368 kms).

We are camped only a 1/2 mile from the Mexico border. We can see Mexico!

Today, a shorter drive is planned to Eagle Pass.

Big price drop on these Gillette Razor Blade Cartridges. Everyone knows they are expensive, so when they're at a record low price you better stock up! This is for the 12 pack...

And in Canada...

  1. Ha Ha on the sand sledding!! We parked at the Eagle Pass Casino last year. Border Patrol Security with a free shuttle to the front door of Casino. They like to give away free meals if you sign up for a players card. We also scored a bunch for free diesel fuel too. Safe travels!

    1. We were going to park there last night but the wind yesterday was pretty strong and we ended up dry camping at Seminole Canyon State Park instead for the night. We hope to stop in at the casino today though just for the freebies, lol! :-)

  2. Great place to park. Have you crossed the Pecos River yet? Great look out and boondocking spot overlooking the river. Very quiet.

    1. Yes, we crossed the Pecos River and you are right there is a nice boondocking spot there but we didn't spend the night, if it had been late afternoon then we probably would have. Nice views of the river though.

    1. It would nice if Blogger/Google could figure out how to put the emojis in blog posts as easily as you can in Facebook.
