We're at the point in this trip where we had planned to put on some miles... so that's what were doing. Yesterday, we drove from the edge of Death Valley National Park, through the oddly named town of Pahrump, around the southern part of Las Vegas, and south from there to Kingman, Arizon. I have to say, the entire drive was nothing special. Even our free overnight spot was nothing special.
So to make up for that, I'd like to talk to you about something that MIGHT become something special...
I received an email the other day from the folks who organize The Global Scavenger Hunt.
You've probably never heard of it before, despite the fact that it's been held almost every year since 2002. It's billed as the competition to crown The World's Greatest Travelers. We've actually known about it for several years, but we've never had the opportunity to take part because of our work schedule at the park. But now it's different.
And we think we might like to enter.
You can read more about it here...
http://globalscavengerhunt.com/
As a two person team, you circumnavigate the globe over a 23 day period, visiting a minimum of ten different countries. During the 23 days, you do not know which country you are going to until only four hours before each flight leaves! During your time in those countries, you take part in various activities. It's been compared to The Amazing Race, but it's actually quite different.
Rather than me tell you more about it, have a look at their 2019 brochure...

Oh, did I mention that there is a $50,000 USD cash prize to the winners?
And that there are only 15 teams in the competition?
There's only one problem.
It costs $12,500 USD per person to enter!
So when I first thought about this, I thought that's ridiculous. $25,000 USD per team for a 23 day trip.
Yep, ridiculous. After all, Ruth and I could travel the world on that kind of money and make it last a full year!
But I remained intrigued. To the point where I have sent in our application.
That doesn't mean we're "in". It means that we now have to go through an interview process. They don't accept just anybody. And they receive more than 100 serious applicants every year and there are only 15 available spots.
Let me say that if we had to pay for this ourselves, we just couldn't justify it. But... we have a large group of long time loyal readers of this blog. And I'm thinking that many of you armchair travelers would love to read about us doing this competition. So much so, that you might be willing to contribute towards the cost.
So we need to gauge the level of interest. If we do this, those who donate towards the cause will get front row seats via their own private blog posts as well as a variety of other benefits. Including the possibility of having your support donated to charity if we win! But we need to know approximately how much you're willing to support us. So we're asking you to quickly fill out the following five second pledge. This is very important to our decision... so please take the time to click where necessary.
This is very preliminary... we may not even be accepted. But if we are, we need to have an idea of where we stand before we can make a commitment.
Comments? Please do!!
OMG you took me down memory lane with your travels through Death Valley. We travel through specifically to see wild flowers in spring....amazing!! We also jumped up and down screaming watching the private air show with the fighter jets...we were the only ones on top of the mountain to watch. I believe we were over 200 feet below sea level at one point. BTW my sister & her husband retired to Pahrump from Los Angeles years ago. Pahrump is now a developed city but when they retired it was a little hole-in-the-wall place. They have a few things of interest in and around the town i.e. a wine tasting place, etc. Oh, if you raise half the money to enter the contest...that would be great.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the pictures of Death Valley and we were able to rekindle some good memories for you. It is definitely an interesting place and we really look forward to heading back there someday so that we can really take the time to explore the area better.
DeleteReally???
ReplyDeleteWhy not?
DeleteIt would definitely not be our usual leisurely style! But we've done a lot of things that aren't our usual style. Sometimes mixing things up a little is good for the soul!
ReplyDeleteReally, really like your present blog...inspires one to perhaps replicate some day what you have experienced. Would help fund Sherman's repairs!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, for your kind words of support, we really do hope that our blog will inspire people to get out there and travel.
DeleteThanks for the kind offer but hopefully Sherman's repairs are all behind us. :-)
