Well that was a productive day off!

We needed a non driving day to get caught up on some things and Danielle didn't mind us hanging around for the day. We got some laundry done, we had a good consistent supply of internet, and managed to get some minor repair and maintenance completed.

And, Danielle had to run into town so we went with her to pick up a couple of things and have a short driving tour of Reno, Nevada since we were here anyhow.

But first, we went for a walk. Danielle is lucky that the suburb where she lives has a ton of walking and biking paths in behind the neighborhood.

45 minutes and 2.6 miles (4.1 kms).

And then, we took a drive into the city.

Not many people downtown.
Government type business was closed for Veterans Day.

The Reno Arch.

We stopped in at the Goodwill store. After our wet feet episode the other day,  we decided it would be a good idea to pick me up another pair of shoes. I only own 2 pairs of footwear... my Merrell hiking boots that I wear all the time, and a pair of sandals. And I'm wearing out the hiking boots too quickly.

And I lucked out... they only had maybe five pairs of running shoes available, and only one was my size... a pair of brand new Sketcher running shoes for $16.20 USD ($22 CAD). Sketcher shoes sell for between $55 and $110, so I would say that I did pretty good!

There is definitely the occasional deal to be had at the Goodwill store.

Back home for lunch, and then Ruth and I had some chores to do in the afternoon. First up was our Weber Grill. We hadn't used it for close to two months. And when I took it out to use it the other day, the inside was covered in mold! Nasty. And very strange, because there have been times where the grill has sat for up to a year when we weren't using Sherman and we never had that problem before. Maybe the amount of moisture and humidity while we were along the coast? Who knows. But we had to totally take it apart and used oven cleaner to totally clean up the inside.

Next up was the fridge burner. I had last cleaned it a year ago when we left Ottawa. But of course we are hardly ever plugged in and so the fridge is running on gas all the time. I took it apart and sure enough, there was a pile of crud inside the burner. What happens is that the inside of the burner exhaust tube corrodes, and flakes of rust particles drop down into the burner itself.

Now, the flame is much crisper and a nice even blue.

Next up was Ruth's bicycle. We knew when we bought it that it needed new tires, and the seller supplied the tires provided we changed them. Well, the front one finally went flat, so I took it apart and changed the tire and put in a new "extra thick" Goodyear tube.

Hard at work!

All done!

While I was doing that, Ruth got the bathroom cleaned and baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies!

It was a productive afternoon!

Today, we are heading further south. Taking the 395 through Carson City and towards Death Valley National Park. Everybody says it's a very scenic drive, so we're looking forward to it!

Yeah, we sort of wanted to keep our "big" winnings under wraps but you've let the cat out of the bag now, lol! :-P

    1. We were pretty pleased about what we managed to get done. We are going to need another day like that by the end of the month.

  4. You guys made it really close to us in Nevada City, but the air is fairly smoky from that horrific Camp Fire, so it's probably just as well. Anyway, sorry we missed you!

    1. We remembered that you mentioned before that you were in Nevada City and had we not changed our minds on our route, we were going to contact you to see if you were around when we went through the area but the fire in Paradise made us rethink our route. Hopefully we can meet up somewhere else down the road.

    2. Sounds good. Sorry you had to change your route due to the fire, but it all works out for the best.

  5. I don't know if scenic is the right word for Death Valley, but to me there's something pure and serene about the desert.

    1. We are certainly looking forward to seeing Death Valley, it is another one of those places that we have heard a lot about and wanted to make it there someday. Looks like someday is not only a few days away. :-)

    1. It was only nice to work in the T-shirt if you were in the sun, if you weren't is was quite cool. The temperature was only around 10C (50F) but the sun felt good and there was no wind.
