I had made arrangements to stay at a water park parking lot, and I contacted them before leaving. I asked if they could make sure the gate is open for us when we arrived around 1:00pm.
We stopped stopped for gasoline just south of San Miguel de Allende.
We kind of overwhelmed the gas station!
Around that time, I received a message back from the water park saying that they had a water line problem and that the water was shut of to the entire park and they were very sorry that we could not stay. I sent a note back saying that we don't need any water... that we only need a place to park for the night.

We had a short stretch of road construction to deal with.
We like taking the back roads.
We stopped for lunch about an hour away from the water park. I had received a message back from them saying they could not get hold of the person to have the gate open. The person I was dealing with was obviously not located at the park itself. Anyhow, I sent a note back saying that we were driving right by anyhow, so would stop in and see what the situation is.
In the meantime, we had to come up with plan B. One alternative was to drive the entire distance to Valle de Bravo, but that was at least another 4 hours drive and I hate long driving days. I got on the internet and found a couple of possibilities between here and there, so something would work out.

We arrived at the Balneario Puesta del Sol to find one half of the gate open. I left the group on the road out front and ran in. I found the maintenance guy, and explained the story.
"Of course you can stay" he says.
Yes! And so we all pulled down the palm lined entrance way.

So normally, the pools are only filled on weekends at this time of year. And, they did say they have no running water at all at the moment.
But the grounds are really pretty!

And the best part? It's free.
There is no charge for parking here, however we will of course leave a nice tip to the night watchman.

The place is located only about 1 km north of the highway 15D toll road that runs between Guadalajara and Mexico City. So there is a little bit of road noise, but not enough to bother us.
Everybody is pretty happy here... we might stay another night!
At happy hour, we had a couple of rousing games of LCR. Great game for a group! Roy pulled off the win in the first game, and Bob in the second game!
Yesterday's drive, 150 kms (93 miles).
You can tell from the photos above that we had a gorgeous blue sky day and that is supposed to continue for the foreseeable future! Highs around 22C (72F) and lows close to freezing. Perfect.

ReplyDeleteThere are lots of nice parks throughout Mexico but this one is certainly a well kept one for being mostly a small water park that serves the local population.

Enjoy watching your trip as we hope to go in 2020 (leaving late 2019). Hopefully, with you guys - but, if you don't go, we'd love to network with others that you know who would like to spend next winter in Mexico. In preparation, we will be selling our tow trailer (has bunks, kids now grown). We just purchased a 1997 24' Safari Trek diesel motorhome! From my reading, diesel should not be a problem, correct? We will be spending 3 weeks down there mid February 2019, though not in an RV this time. Love watching your travels!
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you are watching our trip this winter. We aren't sure yet whether we will do another next winter but we will have our minds made up by June 2019. The 24' Trek, would be the perfect size for traveling down here and no, diesel is not a problem especially with the older model units.

Hi Ruth. We will be staying in San Miguel for a few nights at an Airbnb mid February, then in Guanajuato for a few nights at a hostel. We will bus over to Lake Chapala for a few nights (haven't figured out lodging yet). On Feb 25th we fly from Guadalajara to Huatulco and will bus down to Pto Escondido and stay for several days in a hostel. We will likely take a collectivo up to Oaxaca City (possibly fly, probably collectivo) and then spend several days in the city before we fly home on March 6. I don't know your exact route, but will continue to follow along. ¡Espero que nos encontremos algún día!
DeleteIt sounds like it might be possible that our paths may just cross in either Huatulco or Puerto Escondido. It sounds like you will have a busy couple of weeks and we are sure that you will enjoy yourselves.
