We love market day!

A tianguis is an open-air market that is traditionally held on certain market days in a town or city neighborhood in Mexico and Central America.

San Miguel de Allende has a huge tianguis market. It is held on Sundays and Tuesdays, however the Tuesday market is the larger event. So yesterday, our entire group headed to the market!

We ordered four taxis for our group of 14 people, and headed over to the far side of town.

You can buy almost anything at this market.

Lots of food stalls too!

Having a snooze.

Ruth, getting our fruits and veggies for the next week.

Slice of pie?

How about some delicious strawberries?

The tianguis market is located only a short distance from the Botanical Gardens, so when we were done shopping we grabbed some taxis and headed over there. Wendy stayed in the lobby there and looked after our goods while the rest of us went and explored the gardens.

Some interesting things to see!

Brain cactus!

In the cactus greenhouse.

Pretty!

There are lots of walking trails at the gardens.

Guess who?

And there is an overlook of San Miguel de Allende.

Kevin, Denise, Bob, and Ruth.

Some of the group took taxis to the big La Comer grocery store, while others went directly back to the RV Park. With Bob and Denise, we walked back into the central area, and took the local bus to the RV park.

Our haul from the market.
All of this, for 113 pesos ($5.75 USD, $7.75 CAD).

2 onions, 2 peppers, 1 broccoli, 1/2 large cauliflower, 1/2 kilo green beans, 1/2 kilo strawberries, 1 cantaloupe, 6 potatoes, 2 small zucchini, 9 carrots.

We love market day!

Had a nice happy hour with the group, and our friend Les came for a visit. He lives here in San Miguel. His blog is at http://mexicokid.blogspot.com/

A fiery sunset in San Miguel de Allende.

We've decided to stay one extra day here. That's the benefit of a flexible schedule! When we like a place, we can stay longer... and if we do not, we move on earlier. Today is a free day, so we can rest up for tomorrow's driving day.

  1. That market looks excellent, that amount of produce would easily be $15-20 in Canada (if you can get decent produce, always a challenge in winter)

    1. Thank you Paul and Marti! We sure hope that we are doing a good job, we are certainly doing our best to show them why we love Mexico so much. We haven't heard a single complaint about what we have been seeing, so I guess that is a good sign. :-)

  9. As a gardener I'd love to see the botanical garden, so different from a zone 5 northern one. The produce is amazing.
