A possible rig for Australia

As our regular readers know, we are going to Australia for three months starting in mid May. I've been keeping my eyes open for an RV or campervan of some kind just to get an idea on prices and what's available down under.

There are a lot of backpacker campervans... ranging in price from $6,000 AUD to $15,000 AUD ($4,500 USD to $11,000 USD) (the Canadian dollar is almost on par with the Australian dollar).

But they almost all have very high miles... between 300,000 and 600,000 kms. (186,000 miles to 372,000 miles). Mostly highway miles of course, but still very high by North American standards.

Anyhow, I finally came across one that piqued my interest and we are in discussion with the current owners...

Meet Bundy and Joyce.

They have already named it! Bundy is the truck part and Joyce is the camper part!

Bundy is a 2008 Ford Ranger 4x4 with a 3.0 liter diesel and 125,000 kms (77,000 miles) and Joyce is a well equipped homemade unit. Asking $25,000 AUD ($17,500 USD).

Anyhow, the deal is not done yet and if it doesn't come together something else will come along. But I thought I would give you an idea of what we are looking for.

Yesterday, we went to the Saturday market and then over to friends Heinz and Ulli for the afternoon.

The hat guy.

The plant guy.

Buying some fruits and veggies.

Then it was over to Chema's for some carnitas to go.

He cooks the pork in a big vat.

Then chops it all up for you.

Kevin, Ruth, Ulli, and Heinz.

Our time here in Valle de Juarez is up. It flew by far too quickly and if we do this again next year we will have to plan two weeks in the area.

Today, is a short driving day and we are off to Roca Azul RV Park in Jocotepec.

    1. We are super excited too! At the moment we don't have plans on making it to Uluru. We like to travel slowly and see as much as we can at a nice leisurely pace, so unless something unexpected happens that might take us there, we won't be making our way up there. However, if the rig works out really well then there is always the possibility of keeping the rig when we are finished with it and either renting it out or lending it to friends or relatives until we return perhaps next year, when we could then continue with our exploring of another area in Australia. :-)

    1. Thank you very much! We think Bundy and Joyce would work out really well for us and the plans that we have for exploring Australia.

    1. Well, I guess both Kevin and I must be missing something when it comes to Bundy and Joyce having a connection to Where's Waldo, lol!

    2. I meant, I looked in the photo for two *people* named Bundy and Joyce. Were they hiding in the truck, or behind the rocks? Etc.

  4. Roca is on my radar, can't wait to see photos of it. That little camper in Australia looks so cute, can't you just rent for a few months? Is it cheaper to buy?

    1. Roca Azul is not a bad place but for us it is too crowded! There are quite a few people that like it here though and some that even live here full time.

To rent something in Australia would be very expensive for three months, so yes it is much cheaper to buy something and then sell it when you are done with it.

  5. Can’t wait to see pics of the inside of Bundy & Joyce! Home made! That’s so cool. Love that green top/tunic you are wearing Ruth. Beautiful!

    1. It looks like the guy that made the camper did a nice job on it and it looks to be fairly roomy for being a smaller unit that Sherman. Kevin will be able to stand up in it but it will be a little short for sleeping for him but he can always sleep diagonally. We are sure it will suit our needs nicely for the three months that we will be there.

Thank you, I am like the top as well. :-)
