Finally made it to the mask museum!

I think this is our fifth visit to the city of Zacatecas. After the first one or two, we learned about the Rafael Coronel Mask Museum. It's located in a beautiful old Monastery that was built in the 1500's.

But every time we have gone to visit it, it has been closed!

We finally made it there yesterday.

The collection is housed in this old monastery.

Check out the clear blue sky. Again. We have been in Mexico almost four months and we have only seen rain on three days, and it was overnight! Beautiful weather. Temperature yesterday 25C (77F) during the day, and 10C (50F) at night. Perfect.

Lots of ruins on the monastery property.

Odd statue.

They have these odd looking statues on the property. I found out later that Rafael Coronal is still alive... he is an artist himself and is now 87 years old. Many of his paintings depict these guys with the pointy hats. Maybe related to the "March of Silence" that takes place on Good Friday...?

Another one.

On to the masks.

Not sure how anybody amasses such a collection. There are over 10,000 masks from all over the world. Many related to local customs or celebrations are festivities.

Now that I've seen them, I would rather see them in use in those different parts of the world!

The devil collection.

Carved out of wood.

The masks with big noses.

Lots of masks.

Glad we finally made it there.

Afterwards, it was lunch time! We found a local place for Mexican food. Even after four months, we are not tired of Mexican food. Not at all!

Taqueria Wendy.

Delicious food.

Ruth and I ordered a plate of enchiladas and a bowl of pozole, and then we split them. Both were delicious. We would eat there again. Total bill including a drink each and tip was 200 pesos ($10.50 USD, $14.00 CAD).

After lunch, we walked through downtown and then took the local bus to Walmart where we did some stocking up.

  1. Chicken enchiladas are my favorite, I never tire of Mexican foods either. A neighbor (not someone I like) came back from a week in Puerto Vallarta, they stayed in a crappy Air BNB and all she could do was complain about trying to find a restaurant each day. Then how they got her order wrong. She wants to do all inclusive next time so she can eat at the buffet (like I said, not someone I like)...I said I love Mexican food, love trying new restaurants and much prefer the true Mexican experience. To each his own I guess.

    1. We love chicken enchiladas too and we sure have had some good ones during our trip. There are so many different kinds of Mexican food all over the country and some are just regional. We have even learned of some we had never heard of before. We can't even begin to imagine coming to a country like Mexico where the food is amazing and then say you don't like Mexican food or that you won't even try some new foods because you don't know what they are. That is half the fun of traveling. I guess your "friend" is sure missing out on some delicious foods, good thing you aren't! :-)

    1. We were so happy to finally get to the museum after trying to see it three previous times. I think everyone in the group certainly enjoyed it and Alejandra was there to give us extra information on many of the exhibits. We thoroughly enjoyed her company these last few days. :-)
