A nice stay here at Choke Canyon State Park, but two days is enough.

Yesterday morning, I took the bikes off and we went for a nice 15 km (9 mile) ride around the park.

We stopped in at the front office to ask about the alligators. There are signs warning of them, but we haven't seen any. The lady said "there's lots of them!", but she also said there needs to be a couple of really warm days in a row for them to come out of the water and sun themselves.

But, we did see lots of different birds...

First stop was the bird blind...

This golden fronted woodpecker wouldn't sit still!

Another golden fronted woodpecker.

We stopped at 75 Acre Lake to see the birds.

A white faced ibis.

75 Acre Lake.

This turtle was over a foot long.
I had to sneak up on him so he wouldn't run away!

A female northern cardinal.

A Couch's kingbird.

Gorgeous weather yesterday. Blue sky, and temperature about 86F (30C). Supposed to be a couple of degrees warmer today.

A nice stay here at Choke Canyon State Park, but two days is enough.

Today, we are headed to the outskirts of San Antonio to the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park. Apparently they have some beautiful bike trails.

  1. Lovely bird shots - the Ibis (in all it's forms) is such a neat bird. Reminds me of Egypt

    1. Thank you! It's funny that you mention that because some types of ibises come from Mediterranean area originally.

    1. Thank you! We have seen quite a few of them over the years. We really wanted to get a picture of a green jay though but we only saw one and we weren't quick enough to get a picture of it. They are beautiful.

  3. Birds are interesting to identify as well as watch. South Texas is winter home to over 300 species.

    1. We pretty much enjoy anything that is a wild creature, as long as it is outside and not trying to attack us, lol! ;-)

  5. Thanks again for the beautiful pictures of the birds and turtle. I’m learning more about birds from your blogs than I would ever get at a zoo! Have fun at the Missions... they are quite interesting. Hope the good weather holds up.

    1. Thanks Lynnette! With all the traveling we do, we are always learning more about the birds and so many other things. I have learned more this way and I ever did at school, and it is way more fun. :-)
